Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen about the 13th instant from Cavendish House, Sydney Street, Wellington, a grey overcoat, a large outsidepocket on each side with a small pocket above them, and an inside breast-pocket; the pockets contained a pair of brownkid gloves with sealskin fur round wrists and steel-spring band-fasteners, and a railway pass ; the property of the Hon. J. Paterson ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant from the shop-door of Ho hum, Fleet Street, Dunedin, a boys’ pair of lace-up boots, Ho. 13 ; value 6s. 9d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th instant, from the person of John Campion, while drunk, at Christchurch, a silver hunting lever watch, Ho. 39116, maker Urquhart, Christchurch, whose name is on dial; vaiue £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a mau, name unknown, who was drinking with complainant. Description : Supposed English, about thirty-three years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, lightbrown hair, light-brown or sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache.

Stealing from the shop-doors of the Hew Zealand Clothing Company, Thomas Austin, Walker, Smith, and Co., and Daniel Maher.—A boy named William 14. Bradley has been arrested by Constable Hugh Beaumont, Lyttelton Police, for these offences, ordered to bo whipped, and his father bound over in £25 for his future good behaviour. The two umbrellas, the red-knitted muffler, and three pairs of stockings have been recovered by the police.

Stolen on the 22nd instant from the bedi’oom of James Whately, in Mrs. Thompson’s boarding-house, Willis Street, Wellington, a double-breasted black-pilot cloth overcoat, blackhorn buttons, three outside pockets and an inside left-breast

Stolen on .the 9th instant, from a bedroom in the All Hation’s Hotel, Hew Rush, near Greymouth, a silver lever hunting watch, Ho. 18947, maker’s name not known, plain silver albert guard attached; the property of Jacomo Ilneste; value £4 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 20th instant, from thewhare of John Ritchie, at Upper Tauhertt, near Alfredton, a blue-rep dress-coat with small ticket pockets on outside, a greyish-woollen ulster overcoat with straps at back, a hard black-felt hat with high crown, size 6|, a German-silver spur, three teeth bent in roller, and 158. in silver. Identifiable, except the money. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, long thin features, fair whiskers, and short moustache ; wore dark coat, light trousers, light boots without tacks or heel-plates, and supposed to be wearing the stolen ulster and hat. He was riding a bay horse with fore-shoes only, long body and tail, looked like a coach-horse, and went in the direction of Eketaliuna and Woodville.

Stolen between the 14th and 21st instant, from a tent at Awamoa, near Oamaru, a dark-tweed sac-coat, side pockets with flaps, and an inside breast pocket; the property of Alexander Falconer; value £3. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Dumas, thirty years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, dark hair inclined to curl, with full light board. He occupied the tent from which the coat was stolen.

The gold open-face watch stolen from the dwelling of Margaret Jfwerrsen, at Christchurch, has been recovered. It was found in the possession of John Thomas when arrested by Detective Robert Bain, Dunedin Police, for housebreaking, &c.

Stolen about the 20th ultimo, from the Prince of Wales Hotel, Christchurch, a nearly-new dark-tweed waterproof overcoat, with black-cloth buttons, in the pockets of which were a pair of scarlet knitted cuffs, a pair of black-kid driving gloves, and a tartan-woollen scarf; the property of John Fox; value £2 12s.

Stolen about the 24th September last, from a bedroom in the Imperial Hotel, Dunedin, an opal scarf-pin; value £1; since recovered; the property of ThomasF. Johnson. Edward Banning, who was employed as a waiter in the hotel, pawned the pin at Dunedin on the 24th September last, but Mr. Johnson declines to prosecute him. Description : A Londoner, a cook and waiter, thirty-three years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, Btout build, dark complexion, black hair, clean shaved except dark moustache; usually wears black overcoat with black-fur collar and cuffs. It is said that he has come to Wellington.

Stolen on the 7th instant, from the dwelling of Mrs. Archibald St. Clair, Manners Street, Wellington, a gold scarfpin, head made of part of a broach formed like two leaves; and a gold-and-ivory shirt-stud, gold shank; value 7s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Hellis, alias James Johnson, alias Elson, alias Harris. (For description see Police Gazette, 1880, page 121.)

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the person of William Moore, at Awahuri, a red-leather pocketbook, containing four £1 notes, and a cheque for £2 drawn by 11. S. Palmerston on the Bank of Hew Zealand, Palmerston Horth, and indorsed by Maurice, Samuals, and Co.; and a white-cotton handkerchief. The cheque -was cashed on the 7th instant, at the store of Messrs. London, Ilaybittle, and Co., Feilding, for a person of whom no description can be given.

Stolen about the 7th instant, from the tent of John Bain, at Coleman’s Camp, Piako Swamp, three £1 notes, about ten shillings in silver, and a few pence in copper.

Ox the 13th instant the hnt of Samuel Shepherd, at Lyttelton, was broken into, and the following stolen : A dark-tweed sac coat with three outside pockets each fastened with a button, a Crimean shirt, three white singlets, a light-brown-striped vest, and ss. 6d. in silver; value £2. Clothing identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 6th instant, from the dwelling of James Friend, South Town Belt, Christchurch, a volume of the “ Life and Travels of President Grant,” a brown turkish towel may be marked “T. Dixon,” a white comb about 7 inches long by 2 inches wide, about 7 lb. l-oast beef, and a loaf of bread ; value £1 13s. Book identifiable; identification of towel doubtful. Suspicion attached to Richmond B. Page, who was staying in the house. Description: English, about twenty-three years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, fair hair and complexion, clean-shaved except small fair moustache; wore brown pepper-and-salt single-breasted sac suit; fond of drink. He arrived at Lyttelton from England about tbe 15th ultimo by the ship “Asbbred.” It is supposed he has gone to Hokitika, where he will likely seek employment in a wholesale wine and spirit store.

Stolen between tbe 3rd and 12th instant, from the tent of John Mear, at Mullocky Gully, a pair of blue blankets, a white single blanket, a twill sheet, a pillow aud cover filled with pieces of blue cloth, and a tin containing 5 lb. white sugar; value £1 17s. Pillow identifiable.

The silver watch stolen from the dwelling of Margaret Bowie, at Dunedin, has been recovered, and traced to the possession of John and Isabella Thomas and John Dutton, who have been arrested by Detectives Alexander Henderson and Robert Bain, Dunedin Police. A gold brooch and a pair of earrings, stolen at the same time, but not reported stolen, have also been recovered. These offenders are also charged with several other cases of housebreaking and larceny.

Between the 10th and 12tli instant the shop of William Reid, Tancred Street, Ashburton, was broken into, and a smooth-ing-plane, with varnish nearly all worn off, “ Mathew Muir ” stamped thereon, value 55., and a jack-plane, about half worn, “Philip Williams” stamped thereon, value 55., stolen. Identifiable.

Between the 29th March last and the 16th instant the dwelling of Frederick Urry, at Moa Block, Taranaki, was broken into, and a yellow octagon-shaped concertina with ten whitebone keys on each side, wooden box covered with black oilcloth and lined with red paper, leather strap at top, two hinges, and lock and key, stolen ; value £2. Identifiable.
