Horse and Cattle Stealing.

(See Police Gazette, 1880, pages 64 and 74.) The dark pony saddle-mare, the property of James Walker, • stolen from Te Aute, has been found on Sir William Fox’s run at Rangitikei, where it is believed she was left by the offender C. Cary, alias Kelly.

Stolen during the night of the 2nd instant, from a paddock at Marton, a black saddle-horse, hack-breed, 5 years old, about 15 hands high, branded like a half-circle on near shoulder ; the property of William Stewart; value £ls. Identifiable. It is believed that the horse was stolen by the offender C. Cary, alias Kelly, who is now clean-shaved. Ho may go to Napier or Wairarapa.

John Lloyd is charged, on warrant issued by the Carlyle Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, at Kakaramca, on the 29th ultimo, of a piebald mare, 6 years old, 15 hands high, white legs, face, and nose, an old saddle and a bridle, the property of James O’Sullivan; value £l4. Identifiable. Description: Supposed to be a native of the colony, looked like a stationhand or a liorsebreaker, twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, florid complexion, small fair whiskers and moustache, supposed to be dressed in dark-tweed coat and trousers, and soft black-felt hat. “John Lloyd” may be a fictitious name. He left Waverley on the 30th ultimo, riding the stolen mare, and said he was going to Wanganui or Bull’s. It is supposed he worked in the Feilding, District.

Stolen between the Ist January last and the 30th ultimo, from a paddock at View Hill Run, Canterbury, fourteen merino stud ewes, slit in right ear and bit underneath, and fire brand like I on near check; the property of John Richard Gorton; value £5 each. Identifiable.

JAMES Mahoney, charged on warrant with the larceny as a bailee of a horse, and a saddle and bridle with martingale, the property of William Campbell, sold the horse, &c., at Te Aute on the 6th instant. He arrived at Waipawa on the evening of the Bth instant, and left there again the same night on foot. He had no swag, and, it is believed, had no money, and will likely endeavour to utter valueless cheques. He had a new pair of shepherd’s-plaid trousers with orange stripe in his possession, which he may be wearing. He had been in the 57th Regiment. He is identical with James Mahoney, alias Murphy, charged on warrant with having obtained a pair of boots from Stephen Neary, at Wanganui, by means of a valueless cheque. Thomas Drinkwater is charged, on warrant issued by the Waipawa Bench, with stealing, on the Bth instant, from Te Aute, a dark-grev gelding, three years old, about fourteen hands high, stiff build, branded II on near shoulder ; the property of Spencer Sutton ; value £lO. Identifiable. Description : About fourteen years of age, but looks older, about 4 feet 6 or 8 inches high, slight build, fair freckled complexion, fair hair approaching sandy in colour ; wore dark-tweed suit, dark-tweed helmetshaped hat, and watertight boots. lie may have gone to Woodville, where his parents live, or to Hastings, where relatives of the same name reside.
