Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from the shop of Charles Broadbent, at Carterton, a silver albert watch-chain, long curb-link pattern, yellow stone set in silver and a silver watch-key attached; value £1 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man named Jagger, who was in the shop during Mr. Broadbent’s absence. Description : English, twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet G inches high, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, no beard; wears dark-grey tweed suit and soft grey-felt hat; carries a small black bag with steel mounting, lie had until lately been employed as an operator in the Wellington Telegraphic Office, but he is now travelling for an insurance company.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the bar of the Ben Nevis Hotel, Turakina, a silver lever hunting watch, without glass, Ho. 1209, maker’s name not known, the figures “ 10” of seconds nearly obliterated, steel chain attached ; the properly of Albert Shibbs; value £7 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to three men who were drinking in the bar. Description: First. Supposed English, about, fifty years of age, 5 feet. 5 inches high, stout build, grey hair and whiskers; wore dark pilot coat, dark trousers, and black-felt hat. Second. Supposed Irish, about twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slight build, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ; wore dark suit and black-and-white straw hat. Third. Supposed Irish, about twentyeight years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, red hair, whiskers, and moustache ; wore grey suit and black soft-felt hat. It. is supposed they have gone to Rangitikei.

Stolen during the night of the 10th instant, from the person of John Kells, at Wanganui, a pair of white-lace curtains, 3,l yards long by i 1 yards wide, one torn at, end and the tear sewn together, considerably worn ; the property of John Kells ; value £I. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the Metropolitan Hotel, Wellington, an Irish frieze overcoat, blue-and-brown mixture, light-grey tweed lining ; a dark-brown-and-red mixture tweed shooting coat, lined with black alpaca; and a dark-grey tweed hat; the property of Francis Newton Bruce; value £4 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Central Hotel, Christchurch, an open-faced gold English lever watch, No. 18044, illicit crystal glass, curb-pattern steel chain, with gold Maltese cross with the following inscription, “ 120 yards flat race, won by E. P. Brooks, October, 1873,” and a piece of Cornish stone, cut in shape of band, with a compass in one end, attached ; the property of Elijah Brooks ; value £l6. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 24th ultimo, from tire person of Thomas Tapping, while drunk at Fendletown Road, near Christchurch, an English silver lever hunting watch, maker Ehrlnirdt, No. 66057 ; value £8 10s. Identifiable. A worthless silver hunting C-eneva watch, No. 20125, was put on Mr. Tapping’s watch-chain, instead of the watch stolen.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the person of Daniel Buckley, in the National Hotel, Cambridge, a brown-leather purse with steel clasps, containing 30s. in silver, and a Bendigo gold albert, chain, large ribbed-link pattern, a link near swivel broken ; value £8 10s. Purse and chain identifiable.

Stolen between the 26th ultimo and 3rd instant, from a bedroom in Fraser’s Hotel, Lower llutt, a gold ring with bloodstone in shield shape; the property of John McGuffy Fraser; value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from tho Tairua Boarding-house, Tairua, Auckland, a gold hunting Geneva watch, no glass, face slightly cracked, maker Neill, Edinburgh, a silver chain, longlink pattern, a topaz set in gold, a small silver trinket resembling a dumb bell, a half-crown, and a shilling attached; the property of Morton W. Clierifcon ; value £l3. Identifiable.

On the sth instant the dwelling of Ephraim John Kerr Knight, Drain Road, Flaxlon, Canterbury, was broken into, and a £5 note on the Bank of New Zealand and seven £1 notes stolen.

Stolen during the night of the 25th ultimo, from the person of James Conatly, at Rakaia, a double-cased silver lever Waltham watch, with steel guard attached ; value £5. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the person of Bartholomew Sullivan, at Peninsula Road, Port Chalmers, four £1 notes.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the dwelling of Robert Barclay, Sea View, Green Island Bush, a meerschaum pipe with curved stem, a silver band round bottom of bowl and another round amber, and a red pocket-handkerchief with red spots ; value £l Is. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen coming out of the house. Description : About thirty-five years of ago, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, sallow complexion, dark-brown hair, full reddish whiskers and very long moustache, very red eyes; wore dark-tweed suit, soft black-felt hat, and elastic-side boots. Identifiable. lie went towards Caversham.

Stolen on the sth instant, from (lie store of Curtis Brothers, at Stratford, two new £L notes on the Bank of New Zealand, Nos. 10352 and 1035211. Identifiable.

During thenight of the 7th ills taut the store of Farquharson Proctor, Bond Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and a 60-lb. box of tobacco in half-pound fiat twist cakes stolen therefrom ; box 14 x 14 x 13 inches,marked “Bird in hand,” manufacturer John K. Childrey, Richmond Co.; value £ls. Box identifiable.

C. Coulton, two telegrams, and a letter, the property of Peter Mclntyre, value £5, identifiable; and a sack branded WC, containing three cheek wincey shirts, a singlet, two comforters, one orange and blue, tho other blue red and green, a grey-woollen vest, a pair of woollen trousers, three pairs of Crimean socks, and a chamois-leather bag containing a few shillings, tho property of Duncan Campbell, value £3, identifiable.

Stolen on the 4th or slh instant, from a bedroom in Corbett’s Empire Hotel, Masterton, a £1 note and a double-cased silver watch, number and maker’s name not known, black-bead chain attached; the property of Mary Pederson; value £3 IQs. Watch identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from tho shop-door of Robert Hannah, Cuba Street, Wellington, a ladies’ pair of elastic-side leather boots ; value ss. Gd. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to James Price, alias William Higgins, Irish, a labourer, twentyfour years of age, 5 feet 7£ inches high, fresh complexion, lightauburn hair, sharp-pointed nose; wore datk-grey suit and blackfelt hat.

Two men, names unknown, are charged with stealing, on the 7th instant, from a till in the bar of the North-East Valley Hotel, near Dunedin, between £3 and £-1 in silver; the property of Francis McGrath, Description : First. About 5 feet 0 inches high, slight build, short red whiskers and moustache ; wore dark coat and soft black-felt hat. Second. About 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, short black whiskers and moustache; wore dark coat and soft black-felt, hat. Identifiable. Mr. McGrath’s daughter followed the offenders out of the bar and accused them of stealing the money, when the man first described gave her 6s. 6d., saying that was all lie took.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the person of Henry Sutcliffe, at Port Chalmers, an old open-faced English silver lever watch, No. 3254, cap lost, white dial, and imitation-gold hands ; value £2 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Carr, who was drinking with complainant when he lost the watch. Description : English, a fireman, twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout build, dark eyes and complexion, brown hair, clean-shaved.

During the night of the 11th instant the hotel of George Wyber, at Kensington, near Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen; A £lO note and two £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, a £5 note, thirty-three £1 notes, ten half-sovereigns, £l4 4s. in silver, a cheque on the Colonial Bank for £1 Bs. 4d., drawn by Smith and Foiheringham ; a crossed cheque on the Bank of New Zealand for £1 os., drawn by William Barron; and a cheque on the Bank of Australasia for £3 55., drawn by G. T. Clarke. Cheques identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th instant, from a bedroom in Mrs. Thompson’s boarding-house, Willis Street, Wellington, a pair of small checked snuff-coloured tweed trousers, strap at back torn ; the property of Lewis Whitby Oakley ; value 16s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Walter Dickens, English, a labourer, twenty-three years of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, light-brown hair, small fair beard, whiskers, and moustache; wore brown-tweed suit and hard black-felt hat. He has been recently discharged from gaol, and slept in the room from which the trousers were stolen.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the hut of William Mitchell, at Allday Bay, Otago, a silver American Waltham watch, No. 1077773 ; value £6 10s. Identifiable.

During the night of the 6th instant the dwelling of John Veats, at Sydenham, was broken into, and the following stolen : A silver hunting Geneva watch, No. 13005, maker’s name not known, a ladies’ gold dress ring with white square stone, a pair of bull’s-horn bracelets (bead pattern on elastic, two long oval and two round beads alternately, and a large oval flat piece of horn in centre), a grey Crimean shirt with white stripes, a white vest, a grey smoking-cap with silk lining, a white-cambric handkerchief, 30 lb. cheese, and three bottles of jam; value about £lO. Stolen on the 11th instant, from off a bed in the boardinghouse of William Truckle, at Ashburton, a new grey double blanket, with black bar at ends ; value £l. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to It. G. Guerin, alias Richard Gillon, alias Three-fingered Dick, Irish, fifty-three years, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair mixed with grey, grey tuft on chin, cheeks shaved, mole on right cheek, scar on left eyebrow, middle finger of right hand off; wore light-tweed suit and black hat. He slept in the bed from which the blanket was stolen, and left the house by stealth, and has not since been heard of.

Stolen between the sth and 7th instant, from a hut at Montrose Station, Amuri, an English silver lever hunting watch, nearly new, number unknown, makers’ name Brush and Drummond, Melbourne, on dial and cap, a small black spot near keyhole; a silver albert chain, small plain-link pattern, attached; the property of Nathaniel Rich; value £9. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Teare and George Deane, who occupied the hut. Description : Teare is Irish, a labourer, about

nineteen years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, dark hair and complexion, no hair on face; wore old black frock coat, dark plaid trousers, old white soft-felt hat, and clastic sidebools. Deane is Irish, a labourer, about twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout build, fair hair, whiskers, and moustache, chin shaved, flat nose, and large mouth; wore greytweed suit, soft black-felt hat, and watertight boots. Teare went to Kaikoura, and Deane to Christchurch.

Stolen between the Ist and 12th instant, from a dwelling at Bayswater Station, Southland, a dark grey-check waterproof overcoat, inside grey-check, two pockets on right side and one on left, a small match-pocket on left side also, slit at back, with, two buttons, a malacca cane hunting crop split at top, buck-horn handle with silver band near handle, and several pieces of white-silk ribbon with narrow tartan stripes down centre ; the property of John Jeffry Addison; value £4. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to George Haywood, English, a labourer, about twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, brown hair, sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache. Ho and Ids wife had been employed at the station.
