Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Thomas Williams, alias Walsh, is charged, on warrant issued by the Invercargill Bench, with stealing, on the 19th ultimo, from the Governor Browne Hotel, Invercargill, a whitewaterproof coat, value £2 2s. 6d., since recovered ; the property of James Smith. Description : A native of Victoria, a labourer, twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, dark swarthy complexion, dark-brown hair, broad nose with scar on bridge, large mouth, TW on back of right wrist. A MAN, known as “ Harry,” is charged, on warrant issued by the Outram Bench, with stealing, on the 4tli ultimo, from the tent of George Davis and John June, at Strath Taieri, a large pair of nearly-ne w gi'ey blankets with a small piece of white calico sewn on one corner, a nearly-new r pair of dark-tweed trousers, a pair of dark-tweed trousers and vest, a small box of artists’ paint, two white shirts, and two new swag straps ; value £3 6s. Description : English, a labourer, twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fair fresh complexion, fair hair, brown beard and moustache, beard clipped very short, swaggering gait, and slovenly appearance. It is supposed he has gone to the railway works near Balelutha.

Between 7 and 8 p.m. on the 3rd instant the dwelling of Hannah Barton, Upper Hutt, was broken into and the following stolen : A silver lever half-hunting watch, HJB engraved on back, a piece of black tape and a brass key attached ; a dark nautilus-shell brooch set in gold, two pairs of jet bracelets set in gold, and a pair of earrings and Maltese cross to match ; a small gold watch-guard, cable-link pattern ; a green-enamel brooch, ivy-leaf pattern, with coral beads attached ; a pair of plain gold bracelets with clasps ; a shell snuffbox with silver lid, CO engraved on top, and a small watchstand made of papier-mache, with two small cut-glass scent bottles ; value £SO. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 17th and 23rd ultimo, from a brothel at Bingsland, near Christchurch, a brooch made of two tiger claws joined tgether and set in silver, the sharp ends of claws at extremities; a pair of earrings, each on a tiger’s claw, set in silver; and a common small-link ladies’ gold neck chain, which has been broken in the middle and repaired; the property of Emily Watson ; value £6 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 25th and 27th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Governor Browne Hotel, Auckland, a ladies’ thin gold neck chain ; two small chains about two inches long, with a gold oval locket attached, locket chased on both sides, and very much dented ; a silver solitaire, with four small Jersey-granite stones on top; and a silk purse with rings, containing a pawn ticket for a sewing machine; the property of James William Kendall; value £4. Identifiable.

Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the person of Alfred Selway, while in a brothel off the Octagon, Dunedin, two £5 notes and four £1 notes. Alice McNamara and Blanche Sune suspected.

Stolen between the 19th and 24th ultimo, from the dwelling of George Saunders, at Invercargill, a blue-scarlet moroccoleather purse with brass chain attached broken at one end, containing twelve or fourteen £1 notes, some sovereigns and half-sovereigns, and 20s. in silver ; 065 written on the back of one of the notes. Pimse and notes identifiable. Suspicion attached to a Mrs. Martin, who was employed in the house. Description : Scotch, thirty-five years of age, 5 feet high, red hair.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from the brothel of Jane Brown, North-East Valley, Dunedin, four £1 notes. Suspicion attached to William Turnbull Wilie. Scotch, twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from a bedroom in Barrett’s Hotel, Lambton Quay, Wellington, twenty-two £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand; the property of Daniel McGregor.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the person of Edward W. Brothers, in the strangers’ gallery, House of Representatives, Wellington, a gold watch-guard, close square-link pattern ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Four of the overcoats stolen from the shop-door of James Smith, Cuba Street, have been found in possession of Geoi’go Snook, who has been arrested by Probationary Detective Maurice Sullivan, Wellington Police, and committed for trial.

Between 4.30 p.m. on the 24th and 7-50 a.m. on the 25th ultimo the coach-factory of Elrusbv and Curlett, Oxford Terrace, Christchurch, was broken into, but nothing was stolen. The floor of a small office in tire main building was found on fire, and damaged to the value of £2.

Stolen between the 19th and 22nd ultimo, from the Theatre Royal, Wellington, a grey-capeskin rug, about 5 feet long by 2& feet broad, and a nearly-new pair of white-flowered muslin window curtains, about 3£ yards long ; the property of Robert William Carey; value £2 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to James Shields, who i 3 employed at the Theatre. Description: English, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build, light-brown hair, small fair whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, large blue eyes, and large mouth.

Stoien about the 25th ultimo, from the Bailway Hotel, Amberley, a portmanteau containing twelve pairs of children’s 6oeks, an album, a few necklets, four dozen reels of cotton, two pairs of ladies’ slippers, two watches, ten gold signet rings, three keeper rings, and a gold locket.; the property of Francis Mahoney, a hawker. Portmanteau identifiable. Suspicion attached to Charles West. Description : English, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet t l\ inches high, rather stout build, sallow" complexion, round features, no hair on face except small dark moustache; usually W'ears grey-tweed suit and soft black-fclt hat.

Stolen about the 31st ultimo, from the shop of James Gott, George Street, Port Chalmers, an old open-fuco English lever watch, No. 79268 ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the store of James Chalmers, at Burnside, Green Island, about fifty new corn-sacks, marked DD near mouth; value £2. Identifiable. Two lads, names unknown, sold twenty-eight of the sacks to Bobert \\ allace, at Caversham, on the day they were stolen. Description : First. About sixteen years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, dark complexion and eyes, brown hair; wore dark-tweed suit, lace-up boots, and black sofi-felt hat. Second. About twelve years of age, fair hair and complexion; wore light-tweed suit, blackcloth cap, and lace-up boots. Identifiable. They went towards Dunedin.

Stolen between the 2nd and 4th instant, from the hotel of Thomas McGuire, George Street, Port Chalmers, an AngloGerman concertina with twenty keys, maker’s name Lichenthal, London, on woodwork, one of hand straps has been broken and repaired; value £3 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to two men, names unknown, who wanted to borrow the concertina. Description -. First. English, a ship cook, thirty years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, dark beard of short growth; wore dark suit and hard brown-felt hat. Second. English, a ship carpenter, thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair, clean shaved, except brown moustache ; wore dark coat, grey trousers and vest, and cap with French peak. Both identifiable. It is supposed they went to Dunedin.

Stolen between the 14th of May and the 6th of June last, from the store of James Garden, at Clinton, a three-quarter plated silver lever watch, jewelled in eight holes, No. 1324, maker D. Buchanan, whose name is engraved on back case; value £5. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Daniel Mclntyre, who was then in complainant’s employment. Description : Scotch, a storeman, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair and moustache, no beard.
