(See Police Gazette 1879, page 95.) F. Symons, charged on warrant with obtaining money by false pretences from Benjamin Bailey Johnson, at Waipawa, lin3 been arrested by Sergeant Patrick B. Cahill, Ifawera Police, and

remanded to Napier. His correct name is Edmond H. M. Symons.

James Dripe is charged, on warrant issued by the Haw r era Bench, with having, on the 6th of May last, at Normanby, obtained £2 15s. from Alexander Brett by means of a valueless cheque. Description : Scotch, a sheep-drover, about forty years of ago, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, stout build, ruddy complexion, reddish hair, full beard, whiskers, and moustache ; usually wears light-tweed paget coat and dark-tweed hat. He was seen at Wanganui on the 30th of May. He may have gone to Napier, where he usually stops at the Empire Hotel.

Stewart McGregor, charged on warrant with obtaining goods and money from Charles O’Donnell by means of a valueless cheque, worked recently at the Maerewhenua Diggings. Ho was seen in Oamaru about three weeks ago, and then said he was on his way to Riverton, but he may go to Lyell Creek, Inangahua, where he has friends named James Phillips and John Evans. His correct name is said to be David Thomas Jones.

Richard Wood, charged on warrant with having obtained groceries, &c., value £2 65., from George Ritchie, at Christchurch, by false pretences, lias been arrested by Constable George Laurie, Wellington Police. He has been fined £5, or two months’ labour, for surreptitiously obtaining a passage by the steamer “ Wakatipu ” from Sydney to Wellington.

Horatio Gilchrist is charged, on warrant issued by the Southbridge Bench, with embezzling, on the 24th of January last, at Leeston, £5 19s. 7d., the moneys of the Ellesmere Bacon Curing Company, by whom he was employed as manager. Description : A native of the North of Ireland, a bacon-curer, about twenty-eight or thirty years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, medium build, smart appearance, black hair, clean shaved except dark moustache; when last seen wore light-tweed suit and light-coloured soft-felt hat with black band. He left Leeston on the 20t.h of May last for Christchurch. He worked at his trade in Dunedin, and also in a brewery there.

£2O Reward.

Whereas James Lyons, an important witness in the case of James and Patrick McMenamin, charged with arson, having failed to appear to give evidence at the Resident Magistrate’s Court at Invercargill, on (he sth of May, 1879, and whereupon a warrant was issued for the arrest of the said James Lyons: This is to notify that a reward of £2O is offered for such information as may be given to the police that shall lead to the arrest of the said James Lyons. Description of James Lyons : Forty-six years of age, 5 feet 8£ inches high, stout square build, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, grey eyes, flat nose, native of Ireland, a labourer,

lias been in the army and through the Maori war. Last heard of on the 9th ultimo, about five miles from Tapanui. Particular marks : The name “ Mary Murphy,” also “ anchor and star,” tattooed on right arm.
