Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Breaking into and stealing from the store of William Stavely: William Davis, Edward McElhenney, and David Goldsmith have been arrested for this offence by Detective Alexander Henderson, Dunedin Police.

Stolen about the 10th instant, from the person of Samuel Burrows, in Wellington, a silver lever hunting watch, No. 5065, maker Rotherham, London, value £10; twenty-seven £1 notes, and 17s. 6d. in silver. Watch identifiable.

Stolen about the 26th ultimo, from the person of Jeremiah Kennedy, at Wanganui, a silver hunting horizontal watch, No. 30871, three-quarter capped, maker’s name not known, a small piece of silk hair guard, and 6's. 'or 7s. in silver. Watch identifiable.

Between 1 a.m. on the 27th and 8 a.m. on the 28th ultimo the shop of Robert Brown, George Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and the following stolen: A shilling, one shilling and ninepence in copper, about 5 lb. of lollies, and some cakes; value 10s. Suspicion attached to William Wright, a native of the colony, about sixteen years of age, 5 feet high, stout build, fair hair and complexion, round full face.

Stolen between the 16th and 26th ultimo, from the dwelling of John Bastian, Dunrobin Station, Otago District, two £2O notes, a £lO note, and a £5 note, supposed on the Bank of New Zealand. Suspicion attached to Stephen Farr a native of London, about twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, pock-pitted, thin pale features, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache. Ho had access to the room from which the money was stolen.

Stolen about the Ist instant, from a cash-box in the office of Henry Guthrie and Co., Crawford Street, Dunedin, four £1 notes, supposed on the National Bank, a half-sovereign, about £1 in silver, consisting of sixpenny and threepenny pieces, a shilling very much worn and battered with a hole in it, nine twopenny postage stamps, and a two-shilling duty stamp. Shilling identifiable. Suspicion attached to a lad, named Wollett, who is in complainant’s employment. Description: About nineteen years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, sandy hair and moustache.

Stolen about the 29th ultimo, from the person of Edward Harri Harri, at Tolago Bay, a cheque for £2 on the Bank of New Zealand, Gisborne, drawn by Porter and Large, two £1 notes, and 13s. in silver.

Stolen between tho Bth of February and the Ist of March last, from a bedroom in the Carriers’ Arms Hotel, Dee Street, Invercargill, a dark-grey tweed overcoat with velvet collar, cloth buttons, lined with yellow McKenzie-tartan plaid, not much worn ; the property of William Cochran ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 22nd ultimo, from the shop of Henry William Caverlid, Princes Street, Dunedin, a gold-mounted brown-hair scarf ring, ribbed pattern, gold heart in centre, and two gold wires running through the hair ; value 14s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the dwelling of Henry Orchard, Wilson’s Bay, Auckland District, a brown-leather trunk containing seven £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, 12s. 6d. in silver, an old silver lever watch, three common brooches, and two common watch-chains. Watch, chains, and brooches, value £3, and identifiable. Suspicion attached to a boy, named George Rogers, who was seen in the house during complainant’s absence. Description: Fourteen years of age, medium height, red hair, large freckled features; wore white plaid trousers with black patches on knees, and striped calico shirt. It is supposed he has gone to the Thames.

Stolen between the 12th and 28th ultimo, from the dwelling •of John Noble, Hope Creek, Shortlaud, two seaweed pictures and a fern picture in rewarewa-wood frames, 16 by 12 inches, and a small case containing quartz mixed with moss ; value £B. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the person of Perehera Kerona, at Tolago Bay, a £1 note and 7s. in silver.

Stolen between the 3rd and sth instant, from the office of William Montagu Adam, Crawford Street, Dunedin, a blue pilot-cloth overcoat, with black-velvet collar, lined with darkish tweed, two outside pockets with flaps, a row of black-bone buttons on front, a small slit in tail, considerably worn, a pair of dirty-looking buff gloves in one of the pockets ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 30th ultimo, from the Southland News office, Invercargill, ss. in copper, two boxes of steel nibs, “ L. Rodgers ” or “ Louis Rodgers ” printed on back of each box, value 35.; and six balls of fine twine, value 65.; the property of John and Henry Feldwick.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the oyster saloon of William D. Young, Manners Street, Wellington, two white-handle tableknives, three nickel-silver dinner-forks, and a cut-glass cruet bottle; value 7s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown. Description : Between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet high, slight build, dark hair, and moustache, no whiskers; wore light-tweed suit, dark overcoat, and hard-felt hat. Identifiable.

At 11 p.m. on the sth instant, a man, name unknown, was found in the Post and Telegraph Office at Palmerston North. He made his escape by jumping through a window at the back of the building by which he entered the premises. He is described as about 5 feet 10 inches high, and wore a pair of white moleskin trousers. Nothing was stolen.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from a bedroom in the Club Hotel, Featherston, a pair of moleskin trousers, three nearlynew Crimean shirts, grey colour with dark stripes, and a redcotton handkerchief; the property of Thomas Kelroy ; value £l. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man name unknown, supposed Irish, a labourer, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, beard, and moustache ; wore dark-tweed coat, light-tweed trousers, and cloth cap.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from the dwelling of Albert Pierlo, Lome Street, Wellington, two silver hunting Geneva watches, Nos. 12167 and 65463, maker’s name not known, and a silver albert guard, small-link pattern, with tassel at end of drop; value £5 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man named Clefford, a Herman, but speaks good English, about thirty-seven years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, brown hair and moustache, whiskers commencing to grow ; wore dark-tweed coat, grey-tweed trousers, and black hat.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from a wliare at Jackson Island Railway Works, near Featherston, two £lO notes and two £5 notes on the Bank of New' Zealand, and 2s. in silver ; the property of Peter Taylor.

Stolen about the Ist instant, from the dwelling of Joseph Hamilton, Henley, East Taieri, a silver-mounted five-chambered Colt’s revolver, trigger broken off, number not known, but consists of four figures, the two first being 48 ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 9th of January and 15 th of February last, from the dwelling of Thomas Sproule, at Guthrie and Larnach’s Mill, near Invercargill, a £5 note, three £1 notes, a pair of dark-grey tweed trousers with bone buttons, and a pair of

braces ; value £1 Bs. Suspicion attached to Thomas Spellman* Irish, twenty years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high* rather stout build, dark complexion, black hair, small beard, whiskers, and moustache.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the Oddfellows’ Hall, Wanganui, a set of silver charms, consisting of a waterpot with a view in it, a spade, a rake, and a broach; the property of David Asher; value 4s. 6d. Identifiable.

He left Kaitangata on the Bth or 9th instant for Dunedin or Christchurch.

Stolen about the 4th instant, from the Bay View Boardinghouse, Oamaru, a white-waterproof coat, with black velvet collar, not much worn, the property of Haddor Dennison; value £2 ss. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the person of Ellen Cotton, at Arrowtown, a maroon-velvet purse, 3 by 3 inches, containing four £1 notes, two half-sovereigns, about. 20s. in silver, add a flat gold nugget, about 2 dwt. Purse and nugget identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, from the person of Alexander McCormick, in Dunedin, a brown-leather pocketbook, about 8 by 4 inches, with two compartments and elastic band, containing a £5 note, six £1 notes, a photograph of a house, with the names “E. and A. McMillan” and “ A. McCormack” on back. Photograph and pocketbook identifiable. Suspicion attached to Harry Goater, who was drinking with complainant when the money was stolen. Description : English, a cook and baker, thirty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair hair, light sandy whiskers and goatee, cheeks shaved; wore blue-cloth sac-coat, grey-tweed trousers, and white billycock hat with blaok band.

Stolen about the 11th instant, on board the steamer “ Tui,” between Wellington and Wanganui, a silver lever hunting watch, maker R. Stamford, No. 45241, gold albert chain, longlink pattern connected by small round links, bar broken, and tied with, twine; the property of Henry Wester; value £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Smith, a passenger from Wellington to Wanganui. Description : Supposed English, a brickmaker, between thirty-five and forty years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout build, light hair and beard, cheeks shaved. His wife and family reside at Greymouth.
