Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Thomas Williams, alias Walsh, is charged, on warrant issued by the Invercargill Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on the 31st December last, at Invercargill, of a silver hunting lever watch and a silver chain, since recovered ; the property of Daniel Ness Stewart; value £9 ss. 6d. Description : A native of Victoria, twenty-seven years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark swarthy complexion, dark-brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, grey eyes, broad extended nostrils, large mouth, round chin, TW on back of right wrist, mark of cut on first finger of right hand and on left thumb, star on back of left wrist, mark of scar on bridge of nose. It is supposed he has gone to Lowther.

George James Parker is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on the 9th ultimo, at Auckland, of a pair of cloth trousers ; value £1 Is.; the property of Robert Montgomery. Description: English, a tailor, thirty years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, medium build, dark hair, beard, and moustache, no whiskers. He has been employed as a cook in hotels at Alexandra and Cambridge. There are several other charges of a similar nature pending against him.

Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from a dray, at Ashburton, a nearly-new pepper-and-salt-coloured tweed coat, left sleeve torn, a woollen scarf with red spots, and a wooden pipe with whitebone mouthpiece, three rings round bowl; the property of James Wood ; value £2 15s.

Christie Kipa, charged on warrant with having stolen kauri gum, the property of John Gray, has been arrested by Sergeant olm Donovan, Knwakawa Police.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, at Rakaia, a blue-paget coat, in one of the pockets of which was a pocket-book containing a £2O note, No. 004855, and a £lO note, No. 040092, both on the Bank of New Zealand ; the property of David Campbell. Identifiable. John Irwin, who had been drinking with Campbell for some days previous, took the coat in exchange for his own, and then left Rakaia. Description: Supposed Scotch, a labourer, twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, blue eyes, light hair, thin whiskers, thick beard; wore blue-paget coat, dark trousers, and Scotch cap. He was last heard of at Ban Hill, and then stated he was looking for harvest work.

Stolen about the 21st ultimo, from the fowlhouse of J. W. Perrier, at Milton, two geese, about four months old, and four young roosters, red-brown colour, half game-breed ; value 15s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen about the 28th ultimo, from the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin, two white fuchsias, a red fuchsia, four rose-bushes, a variegated geranium, two heaths, and several carnations of various colours ; the property of James Simpson value £2. Identification doubtful.

Stolen between the 25th and 28th ultimo, from a box at Lyttelton, or on board the steamer “ Hawea,” between there and Napier, a mahogany writing desk, about 18 inches long, 9 inches wide, and 8 inches deep, containing manuscript sermons, &c., drawer at end ; the property of the Rev. Robert Wilkinson ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen about tho 21st ultimo, from a clothes-line at the corner of Melville and High Streets, Dunedin, two white marcella counterpanes, flowered, marked with black-and-red cotton at corners, one of corners slightly torn ; the property of Mary Ann Davis ; value £ 1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 26th ultimo, from the premises of Philip Vautier, at tho Terrace, Wellington, a single flock mattress, a strong watertight boot, and a black-felt hat with soft crown ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen between 8 a.m. on the 12th and 8 a.m. on the 13th ultimo, from a mail-bag on board the steamer “Enterprise,” at Auckland, thirty-three letters from the Thames, addressed to persons in the South, and about twelve letters addressed to persons in Auckland. One was a registered letter, addressed to James Dowling, in care of Mrs. Blight, Christchurch, containing two money orders for £lO each ; another, from William Culpett, Thames, to Ireland Bros., contained two £2O cheques ; and' another,, addressed to Frayter Bros., contained fifteen Alburnia scrip and scrip for fifty Colonial Bank shares. Suspicion attached to Henry Durant, French, a ship cook, thirty years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, dark-brown hair and moustache, cheeks and chin shaved, round full chubby features, bloated appearance.

Stolen, between the 31st ultimo and the 3rd instant, from St. Paul’s School, Stuart Street, Dunedin, a boys’ nearly-new blue-cloth pilot overcoat, lined with black silk, four black bone buttons on each side; the property of William Lawrence Hooper ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen about tho 6th instant, from on board the steamer “ Moa,” at Wellington, four bottles of Dunville’s whiskey, three bottles of Hennessy’s brandy, three bottles of porter, and seven dozen cigars the property of Richard Butt; value £3 15s.
