He boarded at Mr. Littlewood’s Hotel at the time the larceny was committed. He left Wanganui on the 9th ultimo, by the steamer “ Wallabi,” for Port Chalmers, but he may have landed at Lyttelton,

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from the hut of William Johnston, Waimea, an open-face silver lever watch, maker Joseph Ball, Faulkner Street, Liverpool, a long silver chain attached; value £B. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 13th and 15th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mary Sutton, Gibson Quay, Hokitika, three white blankets, a grey-wincey dress, a drab-merino dress, a black-and-white plaid shawl, a white-woollen jacket with puce spots, a white counterpane with a hole in side, a straw bonnet trimmed with brown ribbon and velvet, a calico sheet, a night-dress, a feather pillow, a towel, two calico window-blinds, and a number of school books ; value about £6. Identifiable.

Between 8 p.m. on the 24th and 9 a.m. on the 26th ultimo, the Christchurch Museum was broken into, but nothing was stolen. A cupboard under a show-case in which gold is kept during the day was broken open.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the dwelling of Jules Selles, Kilmore Street East, Christchurch, an oval-shaped gold brooch, leaf-pattern, had five pearls down centre of leaf, two of which have fallen out; value £3. Suspicion attached to Margaret Shannon, Irish, a charwoman, thirty-seven years of age, 5 feet high, medium spare build, thin red face, cocked nose, weak blue eyes ; generally wears black-felt hat with white feather, black-silk jacket, and brown-linsey dress ; fond of drink.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the Empire Restaurant, Lambton Quay, Wellington, a brown-leather pocket-book, 8 by 4 inches, with elastic band, containing two £1 notes, a sovereign, 10s. in silver, and a gold-mounted black-hair guard with gold locket containing two likenesses; the property of Wellen and Carr. Pocket-book, guard, and locket identifiable. Stolen at the same time and place a handkerchief containing £7 in silver; the property of John Fiddler. Suspicion attached to Harry Buckley and Henry Post, who were lodging in the house at the time. Description: Buckley is English, a ship steward, twenty-one years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, small dark moustache, sullen-looking ; wore dark clothes and cheese-cutter cap. Post is English, a labourer, nineteen years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair and complexion; wore dark clothes and wide-awake hat. They left Wellington on the 31st ultimo, by the steamer “ Tui,” for Foxton.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the Clarendon Hotel, Timaru, a ladies’ gold open-faced geneva watch, No. 17499, gold dial, steel hands, an English gold snake-pattern albert chain washed with colonial gold, cross-bar at end, and a heart-shaped English gold locket containing the likeness of a child with hair in curls; the property of Jane Simeuson; value £l2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the shop of Alexander Singer, at Kumara, a silver-plated tea-pot, cream jug, and sugar basin ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 29th ultimo, in the brothel of Ann Sherry) Rattray Street, Dunedin, three £5 notes and three or four £1 notes; the property of Thomas Ferrier.

Stolen about the 15th ultimo, from the dwelling of Esther Cihree, Westport, two calico chemises with plain neck-bands, two pairs of white-cotton stockings, and four or fire white-linen pocket-handkerchiefs; value £l. Chemises identifiable. Suspicion attached to Annie Brown, a prostitute, who resides at Westport.

Restaurant, Napier, a gold bj ioch, hand-pattern, with wreath of entwined flowers thereon, and a small ring with while pearl on one of fingers, a pair of gold earrings of similar design, and a gold mounted greenstone earring ; the property of Edith Goodison ; value £7 17s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Harry Lehonet, French, a cook, thirty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; wore light-coloured tweed coat, dark trousers, and straw hat with black band. He left Napier by the steamer “ Wanaka ” for Christchurch.'

Supposed stolen about the 3rd instant, from the person of William Mantell, at Napier, a pocket-book containing two £lO notes, two £5 notes, and four £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand. Pocket-book identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the Newtown Hotel, Newtown, Wellington, a fancy tea-caddy, about 11 inches long by 4 inches high, circular top; the property of Horace Ames. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen carrying the caddy from a paddock near the hotel. Description : English, a sailor, twenty-one year 3of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, fair hair and complexion, beard commencing to grow, round features, one eye blood-shot; wore blue-cloth coat, light trousers and vest, and Scotch cap; smart appearance. Ho went towards the Patent Slip.

Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from the person of Patrick Mannix, in the Governor Browne Hotel, Hobson Street, Auckland, an English silver lever hunting watch, makers Thomas Bussell and Son, London, No. 3075, and a silver albert chain, twisted-link pattern ; value £lO Bs. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the person of John Barrett, while drunk in the Universal Hotel, McLaggan Street, Dunedin, a chamois purse with steel spring, containing seven £1 notes and about 14s. in silver. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen with his hand in complainant’s pocket. Description : Supposed Irish, said he was a station cook, twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fair hair, beard, and moustache, cheeks shaved ; wore grey-tweed suit.

Stolen on the 25 th ultimo, from tho dwelling of John Burns, at Wyndham, a gold albert chain, one link broken and repaired with a steel ring, swivel well worn. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Frederick Ford and Andrew Connor, who were in complainant’s house, and soon after they left the chain was missed. Description : Ford is a native of Tasmania, a wheelwright, twenty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair hair, no hair on face. Connor is Scotch, a blacksmith, about twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, small fair whiskers and moustache. It. is supposed that Ford has gone to Dunedin, and that he is working at his trade there.

(See Police Gazette, 1879, page 3.) The tea and coffee set stolen from the warehouse of Bennett and Brooking, at Napier, have been recovered. The articles were found by Inspector Scully in the auction-rooms of Banner and Lid die, where they were left for sale by some person at present unknown.

Stolen between the beginning of November last and the 14th ultimo, from the boarding-house of Margaret Wheitley, Avon Street, Christchurch, a ladies’ gold chain, twisted pattern, heart-shaped gold locket attached, a pair of gold-mounted earrings, a ladies’ gold ring with cluster of pearls and ruby in centre, two small oval shaped gold studs, a few linen handkerchiefs, and two pairs of linen cuffs ; the property of Sarah. Jana Hetherington j value £6. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the Ist instant, from the person of William Whitley, at Lyttelton, or in a railway carriage between there and Christchurch, a silver geneva hunting watch, No. 720, hinge damaged, “Tobley and Whitley” scratched on inside of back case, maker’s name not known, aluminum closelink pattern chain attached.
