Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from a bedroom in Smith’s Hotel, Duntroon, a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 63571 ; maker, W. Elichardt, London ; value £9. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the person of Alexander McKay, at Duntroon, a gold albert chain, plain links about half an inch long, no bar, broken at spring ; value £7. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the person of George McCallum, in the Commercial Hotel, Clinton, a pocket-book containing three £5 notes and two £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand. Suspicion attached to Henry Williams, who is employed as billiard-marker in the hotel. Description : English, thirty-four years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, stout build, fresh complexion ; light-brown hair, whiskers, and small moustache; wore brown-tweed paget coat, dark-tweed trousers, and hard black-felt hat. Stolen between the 14th and 16th instant, from the dwelling of William Vautier, the Terrace, Wellington, a plain oak box, about 12 in. by 8 in., containing a £5 note, a gold albert guard,

different pattern lints; a gold-mounted brown-hair guard, a ladies’ gold-ring set with emeralds and pearls in a cluster, a gold locket with cross let in, greenstone back ; a gold locket, one side flowered, the other side gilt over enamel; a greenstone pendant about 2 inches long, two lire insurance policies in the National and Norwich Union Companies, and a number of letters, &c. ; value £25. All identifiable except the £5 note.

Between the 21st of April last and the sth instant, the dwelling of Urenui Mita Hikairo, at Parnell, was broken into and the following stolen: A double-cased silver watch and gold albert chain, three sets of gold studs, one set with diamondshaped tops, and two sets with plain round tops; a black-cloth coat, two brown-velvet coats, two pairs of light-coloured tweed trousers, two vests, a white shirt, and two cotton shirts ; value about £4O. Identifiable. The watch and chain have been recovered. They were sold to a pawnbroker in Auckland by a Maori, who is believed to be identical with Hie. Description : Thirty-one years of age, 5 feet 8| inches high, medium build ; “HIE ” tattooed on right arm and “ TE WATER ” on left arm. (See Police Gazette 1877, page 83.) It is supposed he lias gone to Tauranga.

Stolen about the 24th ultimo, from a dressing-room in the House of Representatives, Wellington, four plain gold shirt, studs, marked “ Street ” on back, and three ivory studs; tho property of Major Paul; value £2. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the sth instant, from Barrett’s Hotel, Lamb!on Quay, Welling! on, a dark-blue melton overcoat with velvet collar, lining torn; the property of Edmund Welsh; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Bth instant, from the shop door of Alexander Sample, Lambton Quay, Wellington, a light-grey waterproof overcoat, size 5 ; value £1 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen about the 25th ultimo, from the House of Representatives, Wellington, a blue ulster overcoat, without belt, considerably worn ; he property of the Hon. W. Gisborne; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the sth and 7th instant, from the bar of the City Hotel, High Street, Dunedin, two £1 notes, the property of John Sibbald; and two £1 notes and 355. in silver, the property of the Dunedin City Club Committee.

Suspicion is now attached to John Henry Ford, described in Police Gazette, 1878, page 30. He is supposed to be at present in Wellington, living with a prostitute named Jane McMahon, who is described in Police Gazette, 1877, pages 02 and 91.

Between the early part of May and the 10th of August last, the dwelling of Michael Lacy, Makarewa, Otago District, was broken into and tho following stolen: A yellow-striped lighttweed trousers and vest, six yards of white calico, a toilet cover, a few petticoats, and four cups and saucers; value £2 Ss. Gd. Identifiable. . " •

Description : A native of Victoria, twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slight build, dark hair, clean shaved except small dark moustache; wore dark-tweed suit and black-felt hat.

Stolen on the 19th instant, from a bedroom in the Empire Hotel, Willis Street, Wellington, ten £2O notes on the Union Bank of Australia ; the property of Robert Cooper.

Stolen on the 18th instant, from the shop door of David Asher, Willis Street, Wellington, a Russian-leather travellingbag, 2i- feet long, with brass clasp and lock; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Identifiable. !

Stolen on the 13th instant, from the dwelling of Martin McMahon, Carey’s Bay, near Port Chalmers, a round-shaped American clock, about ten inches in diameter, white dial, steel hands, nail-hole in back of frame, hinge of door broken and soldered clumsily together ; value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the Bth and 15th instant, from the Public Library, Christchurch, a cedar box in. by 5 in. by 3 in., veneered with mahogany, containing a set of chessmen, blacks made of ebony and whites of boxwood, green felt on the bottom of each; the property of Alfred Theodore Jardine; value £1 10s.
