House-Breaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Between 9 a.m. on the 14th and 7 a.m. on the 15th ultimo, the dwelling of John Abbott, Pakaraka, Auckland District, was broken into and the following stolen : —A black single-breasted coat, trousers, and vest, a greyish coloured double-breasted coat and vest, a double-breasted brown coat, a black overcoat, and a pair of cord riding breeches ; value ±'lo. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Ti Tore, who was seen lurking about the house. Description: A Maori, about twenty-one years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, good looking ; wore old black coat and trousers and round black hat. He was sentenced to nine months’ labour about two years ago for house-breaking and larceny, committed at Ohaewai. He went towards Whangaroa.

Between 5.30 p.m. on the Ist and 8.30 a.m. on the 3rd instant,- the warehouse of Kempthorne, Prosser, & ,Co., Fort Street, Auckland, was broken into, two cash boxes broken open and 20s. in silver stolen therefrom. An unsuccessful attempt to break open the safe was made.

Between the 24th of October lust and 7th ultimo, the dwelling of Rewiti Waikato, at Whata Whata, Auckland District, was broken into and thirty £1 notes stolen therefrom.

Between 6.30 p.m. on the 7th and 7.30 a.m. on the Bth instant, the office of Martin and Watson, Stuart Street, Dunedin, was broken into and an unsuccessful attempt made to break open a safe containing money* which was kept in the office. A heavy sledge hammer, a small hammer, a steel cold chisel, and an anvil chisel, which have been claimed by Messrs. Sinclair and Martin, coachbuilders, King Street, from whose workshop they were taken during the night, were left in the office by the offender. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen loitering about Stuart Street and at the office door at an early hour on the morning of the Bth instant. Description : About twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stout build, full' features, dark hair, about fourteen days’ growth of beard ; wore brown suit and hard black hat; looked like a new arrival. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 20th ultimo, from Barclay’s Accommodation-house, Awatere, Marlborough District, a silver lever hunting watch ; makers, Selar Brothers, London; regulator over cap ; gold Albert twist-pattern guard attached ; the property of Daniel Wiley ; value, £l2 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Edgar Snow, a native of Nelson, a shearer, twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, dark complexion, dark brown hair and beard ; wore dark coat, moleskin trousers, and billycock hat. : '

Stolen, about a month since, from the dwelling of Gerald Mueller, Weld Street, Hokitika, a black oilcloth waterproof coat, large size, 3 inches torn at slit at bottom ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 15th instant, from the dwelling of Joseph Farrell, at Kaiwarawara, Wellington District, a black cloth paget coat with velvet collar, and a pair of trousers of same material; value £5. Identifiable.

, Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from the dwelling of Thomas Manning, Bailey Street, Shorthand, a medium-sized silver lever hunting watch, maker’s name and number not known ; and a silver Geneva hunting watch, No. 59002, old, and much worn; both value £5. Identifiable.

A man named Strann is charged, on warrant issued by the Oamaru Bench, with having, on the • 17th ultimo, at Boundary Creek, near Oamaru, stolen a siver lever watch (since recovered) from the person of Joseph Dougal. Description :> Scotch, a tailor, thirty-six years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, black hair, small moustache and goatee, dark complexion, long roman nose ; wore light grey check coat, dark tweed trousers and vest, and small hard black felt hat. It is supposed he has gone to Christchurch. He is believed to be identical with John Strain, convicted of larceny at Dunedin on the 18th August, 1876, vide Otago Police Gazette, 1876, page 92.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from the dwelling of Samuel Graham, at New River, Westland District, a small black leather pocketbook, containing five £5-notes on the Bank of New Zealand, two £5-notes and five £l-notes bank unknown, a deposit receipt on the Bank of New Zealand for £l5O, and 10s. 6d. in silver; pocketbook and deposit receipt identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Morton, Irish, a miner, thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, medium build, sallow complexion, dark hair. His wife and family live at Kumara.

Stolen, on the 28th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mrs. Hance Wilson, Walker Street, Dunedin, about fifteen yards of black silk, value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen between 6 p.m. on the 4th and 9 a.m. on the sth instant, from the Customhouse Buildings, Wellington, a mercurial marine barometer, “ Kew pattern,” and a ship chronometer, No. 760, the property of the Government; value £45. Identifiable.

Robert Edwards, alias Ropata, -charged on warrant with having stolen a cheque from the shop of Robert Summerville, at Hastings, has been arrested by Constable Thomas Whelan, Tauranga Police, and committed for trial.

On the 3rd instant the dwelling of Thomas Lloyd, at Pighunting Creek, near Timaru, was broken into and the following stolen : Two £l-notes on the Union Bank of Australia, and a Pinote on the Bank of New Zealand. Suspicion attached to two men, names' unknown, who were seen loitering on the road opposite the house. First: about.'twenty-three years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, fair complexion, very little hair on face; wore light tweed jacket, white moleskin trousers, soft felt hat, and new boots. Second : about twenty-one years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, very little hair on face, left eye sore, wore dark tweed suit. They left Timaru on the sth instant by the steamer “ Waitaki,” for Dunedin. ' Entrance to the house was effected by breaking a square of glass in the kitchen window, and, as marks of blood were found in the house, it is believed that the offenders’ hands were cut by the broken glass.

Stolen between 10 p.m. on the 11th and 9 a.m. on the 12th instant, from the person of William Pacey, on board the steamer “ Taupo,” between Lyttelton and Wellington, a £2O- - on the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch Branch.

Stolen between 3 p.m. on the sth and 5 a.m. on the 6th instant from the person of Charles Green, while drunk in the Miners’ Arms Hotel, Nelson, a £2O-note and three £5-notes on the Bank of New Zealand ; the number of the £2O-note is believed to be 003321. Suspicion attached to Henry R. Cundy, a native of the colony, an hotelkeeper, twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, clean shaved, well dressed. He left Nelson on the 10th instant by the steamer “ Wanaka ” for Blenheim.

Stolen between the 24th and 26th ultimo, from the dwelling of Jane Desmond, Walker Street, Dunedin, a pair of doublehoop round pattern colonial gold earrings, hoop about an inch in diameter, and neatly chased ; value 20s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Bridget Johnston, Irish, an umbrella-maker, forty years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark brown hair, turning grey ; usually, wears old black velvet dress and black straw hat. , - '

Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from White Rock Station, East Coast, Wellington District, a large gold locket, with chasing on sides ; and a light-coloured tweed sac coat, the property of

Henry March. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man named Chamberlain, about 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, a little fair hair on face, heavy eyebrows, face much freckled. He left White Rock Station on the Ist instant by the schooner “ Ruby” for Wellington.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from the person of Richard T. Talbot, at Arthur’s Auction Mart, Queen Street, Auckland, four £l-notes on the Bank of New Zealand.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the Wharf Hotel, Queen Street, Auckland, a nearly new pair of men’s elastic side kid boots, the property of Greatrex Naden ; value 255. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Sykes, English, about fifty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, turning grey, grey whiskers, worn full; wore dark blue sac coat, dirty white trousers, and white felt slouched hat; has his arm in a sling.

Stolen on the 7th instant, : from the person of James Neville, while drunk at Featherston, Wellington District.,- a plain leather pocket-book, containing a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, for £ll 18s. 4d., drawn by Edward Riddiford in favour of James Neville, and 12s. in silver. Purse and cheque identifiable.

Stolen between the 2nd and 6th instant, from the dwelling of Denis Ryan, Cameron’s Terrace, Westland District, a chamois bag containing four £5-notes, a £l-note, and a miner’s right, which was issued at Greenstone in May last in favour of Denis Ryan. Bag and miner’s right identifiable Suspicion attached to Patrick Gibbons, a miner, about forty-five years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, brown hair worn short and turning grey, small brown moustache and goatee, small nose plays the fiddle ; had been in the army. He is at present at Cameron’s Terrace, but intends to go to the Canterbury District.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the dwelling of Howard Tupper, Bright Street, Westport, a chemise, a pair of woman’s drawers, a pair of woman’s boots, and a parasol. Identifiable.
