Nostalgia for the homeland no doubt led pioneer settlers to plant the English trees which flank the streets of so many of our towns. In its autumn garb the avenue which lines the road into Arrowtown lends to this Central Otago township an air of tranquillity that gives little hint of the roisterous living it knew as a gold mining boom town of the 1860 s.
