This Month's Cover
Bulk harvesting of apples in the upper Moutere district, Nelson Province, is the subject of this month's cover from a colour photograph by* R. V. Francis Smith. In use is a fork-lift harvester, one of the several variations of bulk handling equipment designed by orchardists themselves for the harvesting of apples and pears. Bulk handling speeds up harvesting and eliminates the lengthy and costly carting of fruit cases to and from the orchard, the unloading and stacking, and the tipping of fruit into the hoppers of the grading machine. All this handling caused bruising of the fruit, which with the bulk method is surprisingly less.
