There is an opening half-way up the door. This is for convenience when breeding birds are being culled or selected. Two of these openings can be seen in the doors in the illustration above. In the illustration below the opening can be closed with a hinged board. The hinges are on the bottom and make it much easier to operate the board than if it was hinged at the top.
