Sturdy independence and friendly co-operation The farmers’ co-operative organisations are members of a great and growing movement. If any proof is necessary, then it is supplied by the fact that the I I member co-operatives, 87 branches and numerous agents of the Farmers’ Co-operatives Movement did more than £53,000,000-worth of business last year. Farmers’ co-operatives originated in New Zealand towards the end of last century in opposition to big overseas marketing companies in order to obtain better and less costly service. From providing buying service, the co-operatives moved to selling as well. By the beginning of World AWar I, the co-operatives were not only selling farm products but also supplying farmers with many of their necessities, such as fertilisers, hardware, machinery and general merchandise. iwwß In 1917, the Co-operatives formed the Farmers’ Co-operative Wholesale Federation (N.Z.) Ltd., to act as a wholesale, indent, liason and TaßfflWi'SiyQal service house. r US.lg,pOi Saßll In doing so, the local co-operatives lost none of their identity or - gnfflfrjjasro individuality. Indeed, they entered wider fields of operation and continued to develop, as they are still doing, according to the special needs of their areas. This mixture of sturdy independence and friendly co-operation means that today a farmer in one part of the country can obtain information, . livestock, seed, produce, grain or any other commodity from any shareholder or client of a co-operative in any other part of the country, It means that thousands of farmers are thriving just that extra bit better than their neighbours because of the strength of the organisation with which they are dealing their own co-operative. ■ . ———- . <i|i II --n - q • v "thio . 0 ftn ~- G a - embraces NORTH ISLAND Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Co.
