Lambing Estimates for 1954 Season

Though the number of breeding ewes in the Dominion in 1954 was 1,069,154 higher than in 1953, the estimated number of lambs is only 656,403 higher than in 1953 and the estimated lambing percentage of 95.73 is 1.54 lower than the 1953 record of 97.27. This decrease has taken place in the North Island, where breeding ewes have increased by 432,008 but the estimated number of lambs has decreased by 479,416, resulting in a decrease of 6.61 in the estimated lambing percentage. In the South Island breeding ewes have increased by 637,156 and the estimated number of lambs has increased by 1,135,819, giving an estimated lambing percentage of 103.01, an increase of 4.49 on the previous year’s figure. The lowered lambing percentage in the North Island would appear to be due to the unfavourable conditions at tupping time. Totals for counties, districts, and the Dominion are set out in the following tables, which have been contributed by the Animal Industry Division of the Department of Agriculture.
