CENTRAL OTAGO

As the importance of goldmining decreased in Central Otago so did the intensification of farming increase, being made possible only by the construction of irrigation schemes. Large areas which could be irrigated beneficially have enabled orchards and good fattening pastures to be established. Though most of the tussock country at the higher elevations is in good condition, the greater part of the lower country is depleted.
