Uses for Aluminium Foil
ALUMINIUM foil, a commodity frequently mentioned in overseas publications, has just come on to the New Zealand market. It is not likely to be very cheap or very plentiful, but it has uses in the kitchen, six of which are given by Norma K. Metson, Rural Sociologist, Department of Agriculture, Wellington. IN appearance the foil is like a sturdy “silver paper”, and is sold in rolls with a cutting device so that the required amount can be removed easily. It is moisture proof, greaseproof, and is not penetrated by air or odours. With careful handling it may be smoothed out, rinsed if necessary, and re-used a number of times. Possible uses for aluminium foil in the kitchen would be: — Wrapping food which is to be kept airtight and fresh, such as cakes or biscuits which are to be posted, sandwiches which have been made before they are needed, or vegetables prepared in advance. Wrapping meat or fish for storage in a refrigerator or for covering containers to prevent drying out and the spread of odours in a refrigerator. Covering pudding basins. Making cup-like containers when individual puddings or small quantities of vegetables are to be cooked separately in a pressure saucepan or in the oven. Covering the top of food which is browning too rapidly in the oven. When the foil has become too torn and crumpled for other uses it makes a good lining for a cake tin when fruit cake is being cooked, as it helps to distribute the heat evenly and prevents the cake from sticking or burning on the bottom.
