Te Kuiti, the principal town of the Waitomo County, is the centre of an extensive fat-lamb, sheep, and cattle raising district. Limeworks near the town, the timber industry to the south centred on Mangapehi, the State coal mine at Benneydale, and the serpentine rock forwarded from Te Kuiti are all important to the economic development of the district.
