This month's cover

A farm scene near Garston, on the upper reaches of the Mataura River, Southland, is shown on this month's cover by L. C. Mitchell. The narrow farmable valley is bounded by the Eyre Mountains on the west,.the Garvie Mountains on the east, and the Hector Mountains in the far distance to the north. The tussockclad mountains are used for extensive pastoral farming and the lower arable land for root and cereal production combined with short-rotation grass for fat lamb raising. The stone stables illustrated are a feature on many Southland and Otago farms.
