WE MUST GROW OUR OWN BARLEY THIS SEASON 40,000 acres of "7 ‘ barley for pig feed and 38,000 acres of malting barley are required in 1945-46. North Island farmers, handy to the dairying districts, are urged to grow more feed barley. South Island growers of malting barley should also step up their production. In places where the climate is dry or the soil light, autumn sown barley gives best results. The land should be well cultivated and ready for sowing in April. Where the soil is moist, spring sowing should be practised. S~ ' 190,000 tons of butterfat are - required in 1945-46. To produce this, thousands more cows will be needed. Retain all sound cows, wintering them with graziers, if necessary. Grow more feed crops and make the fullest possible use of animal manure. In planning your cropping you are - urged to consult your local Primary Production Council. FOOD IS THE FARMERS’ RESPONSIBILITY Issued by the New Zealand Department of Agriculture EIS.AS .
