Lambing Estimates For 1943

IN estimating the number of lambs no account has been taken of the effect of a probable increase in the number of breeding ewes, since the 1941 figures were collected and this must be borne in mind when comparing the estimated number of lambs with those of previous years. It will be noticed that taking the Dominion as a whole the estimated lambing percentage is lower than that for the last three years, attributed to unseasonable climatic conditions. As for the last six years South Island returns are higher than those for the North Island. In general there has been a considerable drop in all districts with the exception of Southland.

America's Victory Gardens. - AMERICA’S Victory-garden programme for 1943, summarised with satisfaction by the Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Claude Wickard, at the Victory Garden Harvest Festival at Chicago, Illinois, has proved that Americans can meet emergencies. Approximately 20,000,000 gardens were cultivated, about 4,000,000 acres of . land were used for them, and some 8,000,000 tons of food were produced. This means that approximately one out of every two families in the United States had Victory gardens. The production amounts to about 125 pounds of food for every man, woman and child in the civilian population. Home production of this quantity of food frees the transport system from an . enormous burden and leaves it better able to transport the supplies the fighting men need.
