Shelter Your Lambs

THIS illustration of . a mothering pen used by a farmer in the Methven District will interest many readers. If turned with its back to the prevailing wind, or drawn up in the shelter of a plantation or hedge in the same field as the flock, the benefit to be derived from it is obvious. Lambs may be placed in. shelter almost as soon as they are dropped, and all delay and trouble in carting them home to the house or shed is made unnecessary. .It has been found that weak lambs sheltered in this pen with their mothers overnight are invariably thriving in the morning. It is inexpensive and simple in construction, and easily moved from field to field. Taking into consideration the time saved in transporting the ewes and lambs, as well as the value of the lambs so saved, it appears that the initial cost of the pen could easily be saved during the first spell of rough weather. —R.
