Grant, Department of Agriculture, addressed the meeting on “Linen Flax.” A club debate was held, the subject being “That the Irrigation Schemes in Canterbury Will Prove Beneficial to the Farming Community as a Whole.” The negative side (N. Palmer, J. Woodhead, A. D. Crossman) gained the decision over the affirmative team (R. Dale, E. Crossman, and R. Bisdee). Mr. G. Mulligan acted as adjudicator. Pleasant Point.—Mr. H. E. Carter, Workers’ Education Association tutor, addressed the meeting and also acted as judge of the club debate. The subject of the latter was “That Root Crops are the Most Satisfactory Means of Wintering Stock.” A. D. Talbot, W. J. Skinner, 0. R. Chapman took the affirmative, and F. R. Clarke, W. B. Cartwright, and D. M. France, jun., spoke for the negative. Waihaorunga.—A talk entitled “Life Assurance and Fire Insurance and Their Relationship to Successful Farming” was given by Mr. Kirk, Waimate. Field day held at Redcliff. Mr. F. and Border Leicester sheep. There was an attendance of 28, including nine members of the general public and five .visitors, from neighbouring clubs. Mid-Canterbury. Ashburton. Mr. S. Freeman, Organising Secretary, spoke on “The Formation of Young Farmers’ Clubs,” and outlined the war effort that could be achieved by this organisation. At a previous meeting the proceeds of a club social, which amounted to £1 3s Id was donated to the Red Cross. Hinds. — to attend stock judging competitions at Lincoln College. Club debating team selected, E. Rhodes (leader), E. Withell, and L. Watson. — Annual speaking contest for Mr. R. Dunkley’s cup. There were two subjects “Means of Rapidly Increasing Farm Production for War Purposes” and “If I Were Minister of Agriculture.” The judge, Mr. J. W. Dent, commented on the high standard of the ten speakers, and placed the first three as follows: — Wightman, 1; G. McCall, 2; A. McKay, 3. Christchurch. Barfield. — J. Deans, of “Homebush,” gave an interesting lecture on “Forestry," and also showed the meeting pictures of European and American forestry methods. At a, previous meeting an impromptu debate, “That Daughters of the Land Should be Admitted as Members of Young Farmers’ Clubs" was held with the three members from the West Melton Club. The Darfield Club took the affirmative, and were declared the winners. Ellesmere. . General business. • Proceeds of annual ball (£3 13s 6d) to be divided between Red Cross and Patriotic Fund. Debate held between club and Farmers’ Union, the -subject being “It is Essential for the Welfare of the New Zealand Livestock Industry that the Embargo be Lifted." Messrs. H. G. Stephens, W. L. Hurford, and C. S. Tod represented the club and took the affirmative. Farmers’ Union speakers- were Messrs. R. G. Bishop, W. S. McLaughlin, and D. M. Lili. The judge, Mr. L.
