Parents' and Friends' Evening at Rongotea Club

J. H. GIBBONS,

Hon. Secretary, Rongotea Club.

IT has become customary to invite our parents and friends to attend the November meeting of the Rongotea Club. Our “evening” this year was a great success, mainly due to the fact that more club members were present than at any other meeting this year, and also because of the large number of parents and friends who attended. The business of the meeting was conducted in the usual way in order to give our parents an insight into the nature of our work as a club. After the meeting was closed two items were contributed by the Te Kawau Piano Accordian Band. Practically all the members of this Band are members of our club. The latter part of the evening was devoted to a debate between members of our club and the Rongotea Farmers’ Union. The subject for the debate was, “That the Young Farmer of Today has Better Opportunities of Success than his Grandfather.” The Farmers’ Union, who.' took the negative, were represented by Messrs. J. Scott, M. Frecklington, and G. R. McKenzie. The club team comprised J. P. Gloyn, R. Brown, and R. O. Gloyn. The adjudicator, Mr. Fox (Rongotea), gave his decision in favour of the Young Farmers’ team. After the debate another bracket of items was contributed by the accordion band. Supper was then served by the club members, who were willingly assisted by several mothers and sisters, to whom the club is much indebted.

The main feature of the supper was a birthday cake made and iced by the club chairman’s sister, Miss Ngaire Dear. The cake was artistically decorated with farm animals, and in one corner was a ploughed paddock with a man and tractor in it. A word on the financial side of the evening may be of interest to clubs.

The rent of the hall was £ 1 15s, cakes cost £1 ss, hot water Is, and sandwiches and milk were supplied by club members. The tea and sugar were what remained from our last monthly meeting. The total expenditure was £3 Is, and the sale of tickets in a raffle totalled £3 17s 6d.
