South Otago Y.F.C. Combined Field Day

A WELCOME improvement in weather conditions favoured the South Otago Young Farmers’ Clubs’ combined field day, which was held in the Clydevale district on Tuesday, August 1. Members from the various clubs in South Otago assembled near the new Greenfield Consolidated School on Tuesday morning, when Mr. R. McCaw, Waitahuna, the leader of the party, welcomed Mr. E. Bruce Levy, Director of the Plant Research Bureau, and Mr. J. W. Woodcock, Fields Superintendent, Department of Agriculture, Dunedin. A move was then made to the farm of Mr. N. McKay, Clydevale, where Mr. Levy discussed various problems of the grassland farmer, using a grass and clover strains trial of the Department of Agriculture as a basis for his talk. Mr. Woodcock then used a pasture topdressing trial to exemplify a talk on the uses of various manures. Mr. Shanks, Warepa Club, proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Levy and Mr. Woodcock for their instructive addresses.

Mammitis in Cows Mr. G. McDonald, of the Clutha Veterinary Association, demonstrated a method of treating mammitis in dairy cows. Mr. Keith McCaw, Lawrence Club, proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. McDonald for his demonstration, and

to Mr. McKay for the facilities for the demonstration. The party of seventy were the guests of the Clydevale and Greenfield branches of the W.D.F.U. at lunch. Mr. W. Lockhart, Milton Club, proposed a vote of thanks, and Mrs. A. C. Kee

and Mrs. D. Christie, presidents of the respective branches, replied. After lunch the farm of Mr. J. Mosley, Clydevale, was visited, and Mr. G. McDonald gave a demonstration on the Clydesdale horse, using as his subject a filly bred by Mr. Mosley. Following this, Mr. F. Mosley demonstrated on the Polled Shorthorn, and Mr. S. Mosley on Romney sheep. Stock Judging . A start was then made with the judging of the horse section of the interclub stock judging competition, following which Mrs. Mosley entertained the party to afternoon tea. Addressing members, Mr. E. F. Pannett, president of the Clydevale Branch of the N.Z.F.U., stressed the necessity for trained farmers to take

their place in the rural life of New Zealand. He expressed the good will of the Clydevale Branch of the N.Z.F.U., and said he hoped that the Clutha Valley Club, which had not been functioning for a time, would be reopened in the near future. Mr. Geeves, Lawrence Club, proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Mosley and Miss Byers for their hospitality. . Members then resumed the judging of the cattle and sheep sections of the inter-club competition. ■ At the completion of the judging an inter-club tug-o’-war was staged, when a mighty tussle occurred in the final between the Clydevale and Stirling Clubs, resulting in a win for Clydevale. Before leaving for Balclutha, Mr. A. Pannett, Clydevale, thanked Mr. and Mrs. J. Mosley and Mr. F. and S. Mosley for the opportunity of visiting one

of the few farms in Otago that can display such a high standard in sheep, cattle, and horses. Mr. Mosley suitably replied. Banquet At Balclutha a banquet was held in the Masonic Hall. Mr. McCaw presided, and the guests of honour were: — Messrs. J. H. Stevenson, Mayor of Balclutha, E. Bruce Levy, A. C. Cameron, J. W. Woodcock, E. Russell, and H. Holgate. At the conclusion, Mr. A. Pannett proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. A. Bell, president of the Clutha Branch of the W.D.F.U., and the members of the branch, who were responsible for the banquet. A social and dance followed, and attracted a good attendance.. R. Anderson and E. Cross were the M.C.’s.
