LOSSES TO APIARISTS IN SOUTHLAND.

The recent disastrous floods in Southland were responsible for heavy losses to the beekeepers. Quite a number of apiaries have been almost completely destroyed, those situated on the river-banks suffering most. Messrs. Allan and Graham’s Mataura Island Apiary, numbering fifty-two colonies, was swept away, but the owners were fortunate enough to recover ten stocks which had drifted against a live hedge. Mr. H. Winslade, .Willowbank Apiary, Kelso, was also a great loser: out of sixty colonies only fifteen remain, the rest being carried away by the rising' in the Pomahaka. Reports have reached me of further losses in minor apiaries, but I have not as yet received full details. The flood of 1913 will long be remembered by the beekeepers of Southland.-
