GOOD RACING AND BIG DIVIDENDS.

GLOAMING’S BRILLIANT FORM

The Feilding JockeyFClub’s spring meeting was held on Tuesday and 'Wednesday of lasi; week, and on both days the weather' was fine and the attendance very large. The rain on Monday had made the course a trifle dead for the opening day, but on Wednesday the track was in splendid order. The racing right through was very interesting, and Mr. J. E. Henrys, the veteran handicapper, had so well concealed the winners that big dividends were the rule on the opening day, which was not a good day for punters. Only one first favourite— Gloaming—scored on the first day, and that gelding and Borealis were the only ones to win on Wednesday.

The management of the sport throughout was excellent, thanks to the good work done by Secretary Ed. Goodbehere and his staff. The improvements effected to the course and the grounds have already been noted, but it must be said that they were greatly admired, while the new electric totalisator gave complete satisfaction and enabled the various races to be got off right up to time. The new entrance to the course is one of the principal improvements, and it will be very pretty later on when the flowers and shrubs are seen to advantage. The club must be con-

gratulated on the improvements, which are on an elaborate scale and will tend to still further popularise the Feilding meetings. Speculation throughout the two days was very brisk, the sum of £44,740 being put through the machine on the first day and £45,853 on Wednesday, making a total of £90,593 for the meeting, a large increase over last year’s figures. The club should make a handsome profit over the meeting, which will give them funds with which to complete improvements now being carried out.

On the first day, Mr. R. H. Skipwith’s starting was not as good as it might have been, but on the Wednesday he did better. The large fields on the first day and the very close finishes caused some confusion to the judge, Mr. J. Cameron, but on the second day he was in much better form.

Gloaming won the Feilding Stakes and the Oroua Stakes with the greatest of ease, being much too brilliant for the crowd opposed to him. Red Ribbon won the St. Andrew’s Handicap in fine style, while the big money on the second day went, to Depredation after a ding-dong battle over the last half-mile with Marqueteur and Dusky Eve. Client shaped well on the first day, but appeared to be feeling the effects of that race on the Wednesday. He will probably do much better later on. Acre was looking on the big side, and will require some racing yet to get back to his best form. FIRST DAY. RED RIBBON WINS ST. ANDREW’S > HANDICAP.

Proceedings opened with the Waituna Hurdles, for which seven went to the post, Maniahere, on the strength of his T.rentham form, being the one most) fancied by backers, Mattock ruling as second in demand. Tempo was out in front in the early stages, and then the favourite took charge, but Manhattan and Mattock were in the lead seven furlongs from home, tjie favourite dropping out of it. Mattock was well handled by A. McDonald, and had the race in safe keeping over the last, five furlongs, winning by four lengths from Manhattan, with Tempo a long way back, third. Pawerewere was fourth.

The great field of 27 lined up in the Trial Plate, and there were several brackets, of whom Maropa and Red Bob were entrusted with most money. The winner turned up in the three-year-old filly Hallo wroz (by Hallowmas), which was out in front early and stayed there, though Miss Elva finished well and was only a neck away. The winner and runnerup were bracketed on the machine. Merry Queen, a three-year-old filly by Merry Moment, might, have won'had she not been blocked at the bend. She looks like turning out well. The lucky backers of Hallowroz and Miss Elva got a big price.

The five acceptors went to the post in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, Tenterfield being sorted out as the most likely winner by backers, though Client got strong support. The lastnamed had to make the pace, as none of the others seemed anxious to force matters. The son of Elevation kept command all the way until about fifty yards from the post, where Red Ribbon came with a rattle and cut down the topweight, Depredation being next and the favourite last. The winner was backed for a lot of money away from the course, being sent out early in the morning by a cunning crowd coupled with Chimera for the Flying, but the last-named could only get second, and the good thing came undone.

Despite the fact that he had top weight, Warrawee was the most solidly backed of the seventeen starters in the Kowhai Handicap, but he had to be content with fourth honours. The winner proved to b e Beloved, the five-year-old daughter of Gazeley getting away better than anything except Valdina, and had the race . won at the bottom of the straight, but was driven along right to the post, getting home by a dozen lengths from Valdina. Blackhead’s number was hoisted second at first, then 22 was substituted, and finally 23 went up, to the relief of Valdina’s backers. Both first and second paid big prices.

Chimera carried more money than Mr. W. R. Kemball’s pair, Missgold and Dunedin, in the Flying Handicap, which looked a good thing for the favourite a furlong from home, but Nursing Sister finished very strongly and got the verdict by a length from Chimera, with Missgold third and Sweet Memory fourth. Acre looked as if he would be all the better for a race or two, but this is not surpris-

ing since it was his first race for the season, and he is a gross horse which needs racing into condition. Astinome got away badly, while Simonides was left at the post. It scarcely need be said that Giodming was made a hot favourite in the Feilding Stakes, for which seven started, Listowel being next in demand. The favourite had no difficulty in winning, Hymestra .finishing fast and cutting Silver Link out of second money, with Listowel next. The last-named did not show the dash expected of him, otherwise he ought to have run second.

Borealis was made a slightly better favourite than Amber Tips in the Fitzroy Hack, for which a big field started. Canyon led to the straight, where Admyra got up and looked a likely winner, when Namur joined issue. The Strowan mare managed to get her head in front of Admyra as they flashed past the post, with Amberine only a neck away, and Canyon next. Amber Tips was never prominent.

Fifteen contested the Kiwitea Welter, for which Matatane was the popular pick, though Raceful and Hurry Up were well backed, with Jutland next in demand. Kipling began well, and was going so nicely at the half-distance that it looked as if he was going to break his run of bad luck. Idle Talk ran up to the leader before the straight was reached and then took command, with several close up. Jutland went after Idle Talk, and a fine finish was fought out, the son of Advance winning by a head, with Simon, who came fast, third, and Railand fourth. CONCLUDING DAY. DEPREDATION WINS MANCHESTER HANDICAP. Racing on the second day opened with the Cheltenham Hurdles, and on the strength of his win on the first clay Mattock was made a better favourite than Tempo, with Manhattan the most fancied of the others, but not, one of the three mentioned got into a place. Vigilo won comfortably at the end from Whetoki. Neither of these two had started on the first day. Tempo again ran badly, though his track work had pointed to him as a very likely winner. Missgold and Trespass between them carried more money than

Chimera in the York Handicap, for _ which a dozen started. Maioha and Astinome led in turn, and then Listowel took charge, but Chimera and Missgold raced to the front at the distance, Chimera scoring a nice win, with Admyra close up, third, and Croesus fourth. There was a big dividend in the Novice Stakes, for which 21 started. Minsk, a six-year-old mare by Martian, hopped out smartly, got a break on the field and led all the way, winning nicely from Stylish Lady, Miss Elva and Golden Vi following in order. Marqueteur carried most money in the Manchester Handicap, Client being the next in demand. Tenterfield led from Dusky Eve right to the fivefurlong post, where Depredation displaced Tenterfield, but Marqueteur put in his claim, while Dusky Eve closed up. A great finish saw Depredation prevail by a neck, with Dusky Eve third, a head away, and then came Client. The last-named did not appear to have benefited by the first day’s race. As a matter of fact, he looked to be knocked out. Borealis won the Nikau Hack from a large field in fine style. He was a good favourite, and well handled by W. Young he caught Blackhead, Namur and American Beauty in the straight, going on to score in attractive style from Beloved and Namur. Amberine finished fourth.

Gloaming beat seven others very easily in the Oroua Stakes. Mockery bolted twice before the start. Sweet Memory showed the way to Statuette and Gloaming to the top of the ■straight, where the crack went to the front and won as he liked from Statuette, which finished fast and cut Sweet Memory out of second money. Acre was fourth. The lastnamed will take some racing yet bo bring him back to his best. Voluble was a strong order for the Rongotea Hack, and the Mystification gelding had the race practically in his keeping half-way up the straight, where his rider (H. Goldfinch) was taking things easy when H. Gray brought Prodigal with a rattle and the favourite got beaten a head. Warrawee ran into third place, and Mangawai was fourth. H. Goldfinch was subsequently suspended for a

period of 14 days for the careless handling of his mount. A very successful meeting was brought to a close by the decision of the Empire Welter, for which nine started, Simon being the popular pick. The winner proved to be Raceful, ridden by J. O’Shea, the Martian colt beating Moutoa Ivanova by a narrow margin, with Rose Queen and Simon close up. The results were: —
