ASHHURST RACING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. ESPERANCE WINS THE CUP. SWEET MEMORY THE FLYING. (From Our Travelling Correspondent.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Wednesday. Fine but windy weather was experienced for the annual meeting of the Ashhurst Racing Club, which took place to-day in the presence of a big crowd of sporting enthusiasts, visitors being present from all parts of the country. The racing was decidedly interesting, and several very close finishes were seen, the race for the Cup providing a fine contest, heads separating the first four horses when the winning line was crossed. People came well provided with the sinews of war, for when the machine closed on the last race it was found that the public had invested £26,670, compared with £20,360 that was handled for the corresponding fixture last year, an increase of £6,310. • ■ ' . Orane had a very comfortable win in the Hack Hurdles, and is evidently as good as his supporters make him out to be. The Elevation gelding is spoken of as a probable Grand National winner. Sweet Memory scored in decisive style in the Pohangina Handicap, running home a comfortable winner. The Maniapoto mare took the lead early, and was never seriously troubled. Hymarty, owned by Mr. F. Ormond, was backed down to a short price in the Flying Hack Handicap, and the issue was never seriously in doubt, the chestnut mare winning easily from Beloved, who ran generously, and should soon • He getting amongst the winners. Tari was the actual favourite in the Cup, with Rose Pink second in request, Sir Fanciful also being well supported. Tari was the first to become prominent, but passing the stands Athens 11. took the lead, and showed the way to the straight entrance, where the field closed up. In one of the best finishes seen on the course. Esperance won by a head from' Lady Energy, with a similar distance separating Rose Pink and Sir Fanciful, who were third and fourth respectively. . On returning to salute the judge, L. Morris, J. Barry, and M. McDonald, who rode the placed horses, endeavoured to bustle the judge before the numbers were hoisted, with the result that they were hauled before the' Judicial Committee, and for their indiscretion the two first-named (Morris and Barry) were fined £5 apiece, while McDonald was severely cautioned for the part he took in the matter. American Beauty scored in fine style in the Komako Hack . Handicap, the mare*s finishing effort being a particularly brilliant one. This descendant of Demosthenes and Rose Shield showed _a rare turn of speed, and should win again in the near future. Jackaroo made . amends for his falling at Horowhenua the previous

week by running home an easy winner in the Maiden Stakes from Siberian and Miss Elva. who filled the places. Siberian, who is trained by her owner (Miss Grace Barrett, of Felding), returned the largest dividend paid out during the day. Nursing Sister and Honey Bee provided a fine finish in the Raumai Welter; success going to the former, who won by a narrow margin. Since being sold out of the Highden stable Nursing Sister has proved a rare bargain for Owner Dave O’Reilly, of Palmerston North, for the brown mare has a habit of continually getting her name on the winning list. Ohiti was well backed for the concluding event, but the Auckland-owned and Opaki-trained galloper was beaten by a length by Admiration, with Hotoke close up third. The three horses named each carried over four figures opposite their names, and they practically had the race to themselves, the other three runners never being in the U Th'e meeting was admirably conducted by the secretary (Mr. A. W. Trass), while the club’s popular president (Mr. P Hanlon) was on hand to extend the hospitality of the club to visitors, one and al] of whom came away with pleasant recollections of their day’s outing at Ashburst. . Mr. Angus Keith was in excellent form at. the barrier, his starting being a theme for admiration, while Mr. J. Cameron, from his position in the judge’s box, gave every satisfaction, his placings leaving no room for doubt. . A. Reed, who is riding in fine form just now, headed , the list of winning riders, with three successes to his credit., W. Young followed close with a brace of wins, while others to ride a winner apiece were: W. Bowden, E. Manson, and J. Barry.
