Palm Oil Still Enjoying Rest —Delight Suffers a.Severe Attack of Strangles —Solistice Being Put Through His Facings by W. Kirk— Mangaranga blow Being Trained by W. J. Donovan—Duo to Finish His Preparation at Woodville For His Weight-for-age Engagements at Ellerslie. NAPIER, Monday. Palm Oil is still enjoying a holiday on his owner’s (Mr. H. R. Peacock) property at Waipukurau. The respite hasi done a lot of good to the son of Mahiapoto and Largesse, who has bulked out considerably. The ailment, an enlargement on one of his knees, it is anticipated will be overcome by a further rest, which his owner intends to indulge him in. ■ During her homeward trip from the Cup meeting at Riccarton Delight contracted a severe attack of strangles, and for a time the filly was in- a bad way. Luckily she is now on: the mend, and her trainer expects to have her. shortly back to her former good health. Though there were a good bunch of “Bay” representatives seen in action at the Ashhurst meeting last week their efforts were not very productive. . Hymarty was the only one to score, her dividend being of the cramped' variety. Honey Bee ran second, starting a - warm favourite, while another heavily-supported representative was Hotoke, who could only get third. Tari had been galloping so well in his track work at Hastings some time prior to the Ashhurst meeting that it appeared as if. he would be one of the hard-to-master in the Cup. However, he let his supporters down badly, for he was not in the first four.

There is every indication that the annual meeting of the Porangahau Racing Club is going to be one of the best that the club has experienced, for the secretary, Mr. E. J. White, is having quite a number of applications for accommodation. I may state that it is a bit different at Porangahau as regards catering for the wants of trainers and their charges,, for at this course men and horses are put up free of charge, the secretary making arrangements for their convenience.

Mr. W. G. Stead is sending a team to Auckland in charge of G. Jones about December 20. It has not yet been definitely decided as to what the strength of the team will be. Toa Taua is still one of the hospital lot at Luke Wilson’s quarters at Hastings, and it is fancied that the son of Mountain Knight ,and Fairy Gold has broken 7 one of his ribs as a result of the train collision that he was in during his return from the late spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club. Demagogue, who got damaged in the same mix-up, is making a good recovery.

Solistice, who was purchased by Mr. W. H. Gaisford, of Oringi, at the thoroughbred sales in Christchurch at Cup time, is being put through his facings by W. Kirk at Woodville. Piroeus (Demosthenes —Formula) has produced a colt foal to Finland at Otatara.

Mangaranga, a three-year-old gelded son of Demosthenes and Formona, 'who had been held on lease by Mr. T. Bevan, of Levin, from Mr. W. Desha, has been returned to his owner, and is now in work at Hastings under the direction of Trainer W. J. Donovan.

Duo is going all serene, and on Wednesday leaves for Woodville, where he will be got ready for his weight-for-age engagements at the approaching summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club. The reason that: the Derby and Canterbury Cup winner is leaving the Hastings tracks is on account of his owner and trainer being of the opinion that the try-out is getting a bit on the flinty side for the son of Demosthenes and Gold Bound to be pfoperly spun out on.
