GISBORNE RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING. The Gisborne Racing Club will hold their summer meeting at Te Hapara on February 3 and 5, and in view of the Cup being set down for decision on the opening day keen interest will be centred in this popular East Coast race fixture. Meetings held at Gisborne are attracting greater attention from owners and trainers throughout the North Island every year, and the prospects of a strong visiting contingent being in evidence at the summer gathering are particularly favourable. That the local horses are a formidable lot was the opinion expressed by Auckland visitors upon returning, from the recent spring meetings at Gisborne, and this view was substantiated by the fact that no less than five events at the Takapuna J.C.’s spring meeting were won by Gisborne representatives. Thus it is plainly evident that it only requires the presence in Gisborne next month of a number of visiting horses to ensure some of the best racing ever witnessed on the East Coast, and a record gathering should be experienced by this progressive racing body. On the opening day chief attention will be focussed upon the Gisborne Cup Handicap, of 500sovs. (450sovs. in specie and a cup valued at 50sovs.), 1 % miles, in which the field should le a particularly strong one. The Wi Pere Memorial Handicap, of 25050v5., six furlongs, will see the sprinters in action, while the Park Handicap, of 160sovs., six furlongs, and the First Welter Handicap, of 150sovs, one mile, both promise to be well patronised. The Handicap Hurdles, of 150 sovs., 1% miles, provides an oppor-

tunity to the jumping division to pick up a useful stake, while .three events are devoted to the requirements of the hack class, namely, the Te Hapara Hack Handicap, of 150sovs., seven furlongs; the Maiden Scurry, of 125 sovs., four furlongs, for horses that have never won a race of any description; and the Railway Hack Handicap, of 150sovs., five furlongs. The principal event on the second day will be the Gisborne Racing Club Handicap, of SOOsovs., one mile, while the Flying Handicap, of 200sovs , six” furlongs, can be depended upon to attract a good field,-; Other second day events are . the Jumpers’ Fiat Race Handicap, of 150sovs., 1% miles £ Taruheru Hack Handicap, of 150sovs., six furlongs; Maidqn ; ; S.,curry Handicap, of 125sovs.,; < fof‘ "horses that have never won aft race, except the winner of the Maiden Scurry the first day, which shall be eligible, live furlongs; Second Welter Handicap, of 150sovs., seven furlongs; Awapuni Hack Handicap, of 15056v5., five furlongs; and the Final Handicap, of 160sovs., seven furlongs.
