TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. FIRST SALUTE WINS ALISON CUP. Though the day was not an ideal one, a sea mist hanging over the harbour and making matters on the unpleasant side part of the time racing was in progress, the large crowd assembled at the spring meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club were fortunate that it was no worse. The changes wrought in the lawn and paddock enclosure, in the situation of the totalisator buildings, the horseboxes, etc., are all for the best, but took a little time to fall in with. A good many investors missed getting their money on winners and losers as well, the unlucky ones being the loudest voiced in their complaints that the facilities were not sufficient at the totalisator house. A lot of money was, however, handled, the sum . of £67,836 10s. being passed through, being an increase of £11,692 10s. over the opening day last year. The racing was good, providing as it did some excellent finishes for the judge to decide. There was never a day’s racing with fewer accidents. Arran dislodged his rider and got away just before the last race, and Waima fell in the Ponui Hurdle Race. There were twenty-one starters for that race, and the fields all through were large with the exception of those for the Alison Cup and the Cheltenham Handicap, in which ten and nine respectively were the number, and these two races drew the heaviest speculation, the totalisator returns alone being sufficient to more than pay both prizes, the club, the Government, and then leave a good surplus—indeed, that was the experience all through. The Melrose Handicap was contested by a field of nineteen, Poanui, Boomaday, Narrow Neck and Jolie Princess being the best supported, but none of these had the luck to get out, and the first four or five to finish were nearly all the time in the picture. Arch Margot, a wiry three-year-old daughter of Marble Arch and the once speedy Gweniad (dam of several fast ones), got the verdict from the useful Forest Gold, Infante (apparently not long in work) being a close third. Aircraft, who led for part of the way, was fourth, and Tuipa fifth. North Loburn returned to the paddock bleeding. Rathlin was made a better favourite than the English-bred horse Prince Willonyx for the Borough Handicap, but whereas Rathlin got away with the lead Prince Willonyx was one that did not get going well, and at the end of a furlong had only two behind him, and he only got near the leading lot as they came to the final bend. Making a good run in the straight, however, Prince Willonyx cut his field down and won by a long neck from Rathlin, who was another from Independence, while Prince Charleroi and Monocrat repeated their form of Ellerslie and were fourth and fifth respectively. Canzonet, who got away well, failed to stay on. Prince Charleroi was said to have been unlucky. T. Glover rode Prince Willonyx. A number of the starters were carrying overweight, and only one carried less than the winner. Pavilion, Multiplane and Coroglen were 'the favourite picks for the Ponui Handicap Hurdles, but Kiriwinning, hard ridden by Rennie, won by three lengths from Shell Shock, both starting at remunerative prices. The saddle shifted on Pavilion, who was third. Hokomai was fourth. Waima fell, and others knocked the hurdles about, but all stood up save Waima. Octoplete made part of the running, but failed to stay. First Salute and Uncle Ned were the best supported for the Alison Cup, which the former won with something in hand from his relative, while Cleft was close up, third. Tinopai did not begin as well as usual. Whether this was due to an injury to her hip, which appeared freshly done, we cannot say, but she nevertheless raced to the front after going about seven furlongs, and Lord Kenilworth, who was leading up to that distance, only continued in second place a little further, when First Salute and Uncle Ned headed him and followed Tinopai into the straight, with Cleft handy. In the run home all three passed Tinopai, and First" Salute won handily by a length and a-quarter from Uncle Ned, with Cleft a neck away, the order of the others being Tinopai, Woody Glen and Lord Kenilworth. First Salute carried 11b., Cleft l%lb„ Lord Kenilworth 61b., and Windorah 91b .overweight. First Salute was ridden by Lowe. The Cambria Handicap brought out a dozen two-year-olds, Oranga being

made favourite, with Amoral, Munus and Soulterina next in order. Amorel and Soulterina were each a bit unlucky in running wide a£ the bend and into the straight, but Oranga won by two and a-half lengths and decisively enough. Amorel showed a good burst of speed. The race was run in 49 2-ssec. Oranga was ridden by T. Glover. The Gisborne gelding Hyrax (or was it H .Gray?) was made a better favourite than Bute Sound, Pepin and Over There for the Ngataringa Handicap, but Royal Mary, Bute Sound and Miss Ellice were the most fortunate from a broken start. Bute Sound headed Royal Mark and won in good style by half a length, Miss Ellice being a length and a-half away, third, Gatherer and Pepin coming next in order. J. O’Shea rode Bute Sound, and his brother, D. M., was on Royal Mark. The Tiri Handicap Hurdles provided a good finish between Luperino, Tenacious and Cymer, sixth, four and first fancies respectively, a head victory being recorded in favour of Luperino, with Cymer a neck off and Scottish Knight fourth. Landslide and' Lucullan were the first fancies for the Cheltenham Handicap, but after Lightning had made the running into the straight Dribble came on the scene and won by half a length, Cantabile, who did not get away too well, being two lengths off, third, with Dead Sweet, who was always prominent, fourth. Arran stumbled and dislodged his rider after pulling up at the end of a preliminary, but was caught and took part in the race. The results were:— MELROSE HANDICAP of 250sovs. Six furlongs. 6— H. E.
