AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING.

CONCLUDING DAY

This meeting was concluded on Wednesday, November .10, in good weather. The attendance was not quite so large as usual on the second day..'. The totalisator. turnover, however, exceeded that, of last year and reached to £75,505 for the day, bringing the. total for the two days to £152,368 10s., an increase of £29,726 10s. on the two days as compared with last year. - There were several falls during the afternoon, but none serious to mar the pleasures of the day. There was good racing and most of the fields were large, the two races with 7.0 minimum and the Welter, with 7.7 as the lowest weight, and the Musket Stakes, for two-year-olds, with only one below 7.0 left in, producing the largest fields, the two-year-old race being contested by no fewer than eighteen runners—a big field for the juveniles at any time in Auckland. There was a similar number in .the Welter, seventeen in the Normanby Handicap, and twenty-nine in the Gordon Handicap, of five furlongs.

The business of the day commenced with the Gordon Handicap, and eight of the starters carried overweight. Tinohoro was made over £5OO a better fancy than the Poverty Bay visitor Cantabile and the bracketed pair Miss Ellice and Illumination, Loved One being backed to more .than double the. extent he was on the first day, Clonmel and Rekatpa coming next. As matters turned out nothing had a chance with Cantabile from start to .finish, as the son of Blackguard jumped away smartly and remained in front, winning by four lengths from Jolie Princess, who, after getting clear, ran into second place and finished three lengths in front of Octoplete, who carried 10. b. overweight—perhaps not a matter oZ monient for such a big one. Canzonetj who is the least ready on appearance,, was placed fourth, Hori and Miss Ellice coming next.. The five furlongs occupied Imin. 2sec. Though Cantabile was second favourite he paid a splendid dividend, and so did Jolie Princess.

Cymer was the strongest of favourites for the Manukau Hurdle Race, but he was sore and was being ridden hard some lengths behind the others when they reached the third hurdle past the stewards’ stand. There he shirked the obstacle and shot Henderson (who was “Sloaning” him) off. Scottish Knight and Battletide remained in front round the back. Pendoon headed the last-named along the top stretch, and in the straight came away from Scottish Knight, winning very easily by four lengths. Scottish Knight was six lengths ahead of Battletide, with Otara and Golden Petal in order. Listowel was made a good'favourite for the Epsom Handicap, Queen Abbey, Inah and Esthonia each being so well supported that Landslide, who was the first to catch the brilliant Inah, paid a good price, as did the neglected First Salute, who' disputed the neck finish with Landslide and beat Inah half a length, with Esthonia fourth. Woden ran wide at the turn and Queen Abbey failed to show up, but ‘Listowel was finishing strongly whep the race was practically over.

Volo was made a better favourite than Some Boy 11. for the King Edward Memorial Handicap, and both looked well after the first day’s racing, though both had increased imposts. Blue Cross went out in front, with Marble Slab as his nearest attendant as they passed the stands and went out of the straight and along the back, where Tinopai was third and Woody Glen and Lord Kenilworth moved up, Some Boy 11. being handy as they reached the top stretch. Blue Cross maintained the lead into the where Marble Slab lost his place to Woody Glen, who, coming on, tackled Blue Cross and beat him nicely by half a length, Marble Slab, finishing, better than Tinopai, being third, two lengths off. Alteration was next. The first six furlongs took Imin. 19 2-ssec, mile Imin. 45sec., and the mile and a-half 2min 35 3-ssec., the last half-mile being the fastest and showing Woody Glen as a stayer. He carried .71b. overweight, making his weight 7.2, but, of course, was receiving a liberal concession from Volo and Some Boy 11. The lastnamed, regrettable to say, though he finished, broke down before reaching the post, and was led back to the paddock so lame that he has practically said good-bye to the turf, on which he proved himself a shining light.

The Onehunga Steeplechase, for

which the weights were declared before the meeting commenced; drew eight starters. Koura, who had fallen in the Hunters’ Steeplechase, and perhaps feeling some ill-effect therefrom, was first favourite, Hopye, First Call and Waimai being backed in order. First Call, the most seasoned of the lot by recent racing, went out to make the pace sound all the way, and his first circuit of the course was one of the fastest" registered over it. He gave a 'perfect exhibition of clean jumping, and it looked as if he would not be caught, but going up the hill the last time Hopye joined issue and led him to the first obstacle on top, only to fall thereat, and this left First Call with a long lead of Tenacious, Waimai and Koura, Gluetanus, Papatere and Totara Jack having made mistakes. First Call won by twentyfive lengths from Tenacious, Waimai being a hundred yards further back. Koura, who jumped the fences very slowly, was three lengths behind Waimai. The time of the race —6min. 12sec. —was very good, and Wairiki’s son (First Call), though unsound for a considerable time, has stood up to

his work well. With so large a field as eighteen two-year-olds, the Musket Stakes naturally created a good deal of interest. Maunu, who should have- won

the Welcome Stakes, in which he was fourth, was ridden by J. Olsen and was made a very short odds favourite, .'Namutere, who had led for some distance in the race referred to, being next in. demand, with Anomaly, Toa Taua and Soulterina next in order in the betting. Namutere led, with Oranga and Loyal Irish, Dissertation and Soult, erina handy, and Maunu at the head of the second division. Halfway down the straight the last-named tried to get through on the inside, but had no luck,. but at the distance got a clear run and struck the front a little further on, heading Oranga and Namutere, who were also caught by Dissertation, who finished three-parts of a length behind Maunu, who beat Oranga a neck, Namutere a head away, fourth, with Loyal Irish, Anomaly, Roman, Soulterina and Toa Taua next. The half-mile was run in 49 3-seec. The winner in other than good hands might easily have lost again. Llanberis got away from her rider in the straight opposite the judge’s box while the others were doing their preliminaries, but was brought back and started. Maunu was the only favourite to win during the afternoon. Miss Leslie was made favourite for the Normanby Handicap, Peter Maxwell, Guerre a Mort and Pukemarama being next best fancied. Clonmel, Miss Leslie and Oak Abbey led into the straight, then Bute Sound, Tieki and Pepin drew up, and also Sylvan, and the quartette headed Clonmel. Bute Sound winning by three-parts of a length from the topweight, Tieki, whose second race it was. Pepin was half a length off, tlrrd, with Sylvan close up, fourth. The time was imin. 29sec.

A very strong favourite indeed was made of Royal Abbey for the Liver-

pool Welter, Arch Salute, who should be better served over a distance, being' second fancy, with Comedy Prince next in request, Actrice and Gold Kip also going over the £lOOO mark, betting on this race being the heaviest of the meeting. Monocrat and Prince Charleroi, both well served on the score of weight, got to the lead first, and the last-named, taking charge early, was never headed, winning by a length and a-half from Monocrat, Bezant finishing three-parts of a length ~oif, third; with Arran a good fourth. Kinkora and Gold Kip were next. The results w’ere: —
