AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. GLEN CANNY WINS THE CUP. MERMIN THE AVONDALE STAKES. This long-looked for meeting was to have opened on the 25th. ult., but a very heavy fall of rain on the day preceding influenced the executive of the club in postponing to the 29th, the day originally fixed for the second day of the meeting. The weather started to improve, and the track to dry up, so that by Tuesday it was in capital condition, that day being an ideal spring one. Wednesday opened fine also, and continued so to just before the seventh race, when rain fell, mildly at first, but copiously in the interval between the two last races, sending everyone to shelter. It was unfortunate that the faulty working of the barrier for the first race, which resulted in a false start, and a delay of over half an hour in the races following, or the last event would have been got over before the heaviest of the rain fell. There was a very large crowd out to witness the afternoon’s sport, and motor traffic was never so great, owing to the trams not running. As usual, speculation per medium of the. totalisator was heavy, averaging over £7OOO per race, the sum of £56,382 being machined. There were three or four big dividends, and several

substantial prices during the afternoon. The racing was very good, the fields being large and of greater average in each department than usual. The management was up to Mr. H. H. Hayr (secretary), committee and staff’s usual standard. The false start was no fault of Mr. Harley, the club’s official, and the stewards did what they considered the right thing in ordering the nine riders who completed the course to return to the starting post on learning that the starter had declared that it was no start.

Twenty-six horses that had never previously won a race, including a few beginners, but a good many that have raced often, came out for the Maiden Plate, horses of all ages from three years old composing the field, and all having the option of carrying the same weight (8.0). There were five carrying over-weight, one (Antoris) as much as 161 b., and another (Dixiphone) 81b. The horses that finished the distance in the false start were: Querre a Mort, Khublai Khan, Octoplete, Some Fashion, and Prudent Lad, in order Esplanade, Pembrey, Brodick, Pukemaramara, and Poanui going only a furlong or two before being pulled up. None of these showed up prominenlty in the race proper with the exception of Poanui. who got the lead early, and kept it into the straight, where Regent (late Aranui), a four-year-old by Marble Arch, and Stork, a three-year-old by Hallowmas, came on, Regent winning by half a length. Poanui was three lengths away, with Jolly Princess fourth.' Stork was a solid favourite, with Khublai Khan second fancy. Querre a Mort was at an outside price, as was also the

winner, who is from Kakama, who raced conspicuously for several seasons.

Kerehone was made favourite for the Grey Lynn Hurdle Race, with Cymer second selection, and Sir Agnes third. Kerehone started off well, but Cymer outjumped him and everything else in the race, winning in good style by six lengths from Sir Agnes, with Keystone four lengths off third, followed by Kerehone, Peneton, Golden Petal, and Tenacious, in order. Keen interest was manifested in the appearance of the Avondale Stakes candidates, and after some scratchings the card showed that there was a round dozen left. Mermin, a neat, muscular, medium-sized chestnut colt, by Absurd from Sea Elf, owned by Mr. W. G. Stead, was made favourite, and he was more forward and ready for business than the other chestnut colts by the same sire, Grotesque (from Bronze), and Loyal Irish (from Moira ma Chree), respectively owned by Mr. A. B. Williams and J. Williamson, nice colts both of them. Of the fillies. Lady Violet (Boniform — Vicereine), and Rose Thurnham (Thurnham — Olellua) were the most quality-like, and are chestnuts. Martial Dawn (Martian —Torquato), and Llanberis (Marble Arch —Recoup) look useful sorts. The last-named has the greater size, but she will need further education. Pengwen will need more time. Marble Crag, a colt by Marble Arch

from Monorosae, Sunny River (Sunny Lake— Orange Pippin), and Koodoo (Elysian — Kowerewere) may each pay their way with age, and Marble Crag may be the first of the trio to score. Oranga (Royal Soult — Cadence) met two more capable than himself. Though he beat them out of the barrier and covered less ground than anything in the race — which helped him to maintain the lead to within the distance —Mermin was too much of the gentleman over the concluding furlong, and won impressively, while Lady Violet got up and beat Oranga nearing the goal after a good struggle. Martial Dawn was fourth. Loyal Irish, who did not improve his chance by running wide, and besides walked sore, was fifth, with Marble Crag sixth, and Grotesque, who looked still more gross when he came in than when he went out, seventh. Mermin’s time (51sec.) was really excellent for the course. Miss Foley, daughter of the president, decorated the winner.

There were three scratchings from the lot carded for the Avondale Cup. Gazique, looking fit and bright, was made favourite, with Glen Canny on his chance, followed by Marqueteur with about £5OO less than Glen next in demand, with about £6OO less Canny, and the three-year-olds Gasbag and Landslide. The race does not need much description, as Glen Canny practically led all the way. Landslide and Gazique were nearest him-most of the way, and when Landslide could hang on no longer Gasque closed on the leader, and ..got within a length. Woody Glen, who was staying on and finishing we 11,., got within two lengths of Gazique,’..followed in order by Landslide, Gasbag,

Marquetfettf;' Sir Ralph; Alteration, Blue Cross, and Comedy Prince. Glen Canny had lost a good many friends in consequence of his work not pleasing during the preceding week, but the going suited him, and he ran a nice race. It is not often that Tso many as 16 go outffor a steeplechase at Avondale, but’ ; that is tfie number that started for the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, which 1 - furnished an interesting race. First Call was favourite, but though he was always running prominently and occupied third plaice ' at the finish, it looked as if he : was lucky to get so close up; indeed,' the race up to the time Daloopin fell three fences from home looked likely to go to that, big boldfencing son of Rohepotae and Riviera, who, • kept :getting away; from the others at the obstacles, and as frequently pulled back to his field. Coroglen, a five-year-old useful sort, by Glenalbyn (sire of Woody Glen), was running Daloopin close, however, and Koura had been battling along well. Coroglen was well fancied and had a private reputation, which he well sustained, as he beat Dr. Grant’s mare (Koura) in good style. First Call was about ten lengths away, .and then came Capsal, Lady Salvadan, John Bunny, Hopye (who pulled up lame), Maira, Jacaranda, Gladwin, and Yankee Doodle. Harbour Light, who toiled in the rear from the start, Kopurahi, who went well for two rounds, Irishland and Master Harold

all failed to complete the contract. The , Henderson Apprentices’ Handicap saw Geoffrey, Tama-a-roa, Te Oro, Illumination, and Scrap o’ Paper the best supported, and those the most prominent were Escaped, Geoffrey, Tama-a-roa, and Gold Plane. Tama-a-roa got to the front turning the last bend, and in the run home went . faster than Geoffrey and Escaped. Gold Plane made a good final effort, and got. within two lengths of Tama-a-roa, with Geoffrey the same distance away third, and Escaped fourth, followed by Tuipa and Scrap o’ Paper. Glover, Gussey, and Wiggins were the respective riders of the placed division, and the first-named must be getting on towards the stage when he will no longer be able to ride as an apprentice.

Militaire, with his form at Marton to recommend him, was made favourite for the Hack Welter, North Loburn, for the reason that H. ■ Gray was riding him, being second in demand, Bitholia, on his recent track work, being a good third fancy, despite his weight. Blackhead. Pepin, Tom Moore, and Militaire were prominent to the back, when Militaire took charge, with North Loburn, Actrice, and Bitholia handy. The last-named pair, finishing well, came on and passed the judge together, the verdict of a head being gained by Actrice. Kinkora, finishing on, beat Militaire for third place, with Rathlin; North Loburn, and Monopole next. The backers of Actrice received the dividend of the day. Mr. Prangley’s win was : popular. There were 17 starters for the Flying Handicap; an’d after a number of the : riders had. taken, shelter from a

heavy downpour, the race was started, half an hour late, in an obscure light, in which it was only possible to pick up the runners when near- ., this! ‘.stage;., of ..the race 'v-it: was ' seen that .Arran .was putting r ih ; some telling strides, and he beat ' Emerald Hill, who ' finished well, by a length, with , Crowhurst . half a length away third, /Delight, Parisian Diamond, and Prince Charleroi being handy. King Abbey was only prominent for a furlong or two, and Blackmail showed out temporarily. Arran’s win provided : backers with a substantial divided, a little more than half that paid by Actrice in the previous race, which was a big haul for the lucky ones. CONCLUDING DAY. The meeting was concluded on Saturday in fine weather and before a record crowd Racing startd at 11 o’clock, and the last race was concluded about 4.50 and the people got back to their homes and to the city about an hour earlier than usual. The totalisator turnover reached £69,189 10s., representing an increase of £18,333 on the day. For the two days £126,900 was invested, as against £97,047 10s., an increase of £29,852 10s. for the two days. Monopole, who contested a flat race on the opening day, and Cymer, who won the first hurdle race of the meeting, were almost equally supported for the Kingsland Handicap Hurdle Race, carrying between them half the pool in a field of nine. Golden Petal went out to try and win from end to end, but Cymer and Sir Agnes and Monopole in turn headed him. Before the last quarter was entered upon Sir Agnes was well clear of Cymer and won by two lengths, Monopole catching the lastrnamed and beating him half a length for second place. Golden Petal was about two lengths off, fourth. Sir Agnes is getting on in years, but is improving with experience. He had a change of riders, and Rennie kept at him until he struck the front. The Nursery Handicap introduced us to five competitors which had not faced the music on the opening day, and that lent additional interest to the event. Prince Ferouz, a white-faced bay by Feramorz (imp.) and a shapely enough colt from Cheloma (imp.), probably by reason of his being a stable companion of the winner of the Avondale Stakes, which gave his connections a line, was more backed than Lady Violet, who had finished second in that race, beating Oranga, who was third then and third selection in the event under notice. This lastnamed pair got fourth and fifth but did not strike the front at any stage, and it was left to Mr. H. E. Troutbeck’s Maunu, a medium-sized colt by

Wolawa from the Merriwee mare ,4-roni tire , outside position and to lead all the way, having enough left to stall off the.fav- . : o.urite,. who he. beat .by a; length. Namutefe, a neat sbn of Beiragoon and Golden ‘ Fly, is on the small side. He got within a neck, and Lady Violet, Oranga, Silver Rain, Marble Crag, King Pellicle (late Coppers), and

Martial Dawn finished in order. The field for the Avondale Guineas, owing to scratchings was reduced to seven starters, Landslide being made a very pronounced first favourite, Gasbag being the most fancied of the others, with Blackmail and Stork next. The backers sized up the situation exactly so far as the horses named were concerned, and Landslide won after a nice race by nearly a length, Gasbag beating Blackmail by a neck, with Stork a length away, third. Mr. E. Alison’s success was well received. There were only seven starters for the Plumpton Handicap, Gazique, with H. Robinson up, being made a very pronounced favourite, Woody Glen, with about half the amount second in demand. 80-Peep, Some Boy IL, and Bedford were next in favour. Some Boy 11. dashed to the front and led out of the straight round the first

bend and along the back, where Sir Ralph joined him. Some Boy 11. was still in front rounding the home turn and then compounded, and it looked as though Sir Ralph would score, but. Gazique came with a well-sustained run and snatched a victory on rhe post by a short head, Woody Glen a length away, and Marble Slab and Some Boy 11. next. The Mount Albert Steeplechase was won from end to end by First Call, who was third selection. Coroglen and Peneton were running behind him with a round to go, when Coroglen fell and Tenacious, who was always in third or fourth place, finished third, the judge assessing the distance between each at ten lengths. Yankee Doodle and Lady Salvadan finished fourth and fifth respectively, the others being eased up. Parisian Diamond was entrusted with more support than Crowhurst, Tama-a-roa and Arran for the President’s Handicap, in which figured Lord Kenilworth, Comedy Prince, Caricature, Emerald Hill, Scrap o’ Pf per and Prince Charleroi. A splendid finish resulted in Arran winning by a head from Tama-a-roa, who beat Parisian Diamond by a neck. Comedy Prince was fourth, and Emerald Hill next. The large field of twenty-nine went out for the New Lynn Hack Race, and there were eleven horses carrying overweight. Regent, the third favourite, who won the Maiden Race on the first day, won by three parts of a length, and Strategy, the favourite, beat' Some Fashion in the last hundred yards by a half a length, Khublai Khan finishing nicely fourth. £10,378 10s. was invested on this race. The meeting was brought to a conclusioiT with the Nihotapu Welter, and Rathlin made the pace so strong that nothing could catch him, and he ultimately won by a length. Bitholia, the favourite, beating Lady Energy by half a length for second place, Blue Cross being fourth. Te Oro’s number was hoisted in second place, but was quickly pulled down again and that of Bitholia substituted.
