SPRING MEETING

With the Marton Jockey Club s spring meeting, which takes piaee on Wednesday, September 1, but a tew weeks off, increased activity is to oe noted in the case of a large number of trainers who contemplate patronising this popular fixture with their horses The Marton Jockey Club have placed a remunerative eramme before its patrons, and excellent inducements offered L ers and trainers will assuredly attract snlendid nominations. The leaning St event is the Marton Handmap (open), of 26050V5., miles, in which the minimum weight is 7.0, and that a high-class field will be on hand to contest the first of the b g spring handicaps in the Korth Island for the new season is evidenced by the large number of horses at pre sent being prepared with a view to carrying silk at the Marton fixture. The open sprint race consists of the Railway Handicap, of 22050v5., six furlongk, in which the entry promises to be of a large and representative character.

Considerable interest is being centred in the Rangitikei Steeplechase, of 27550v5., three miles, and with limited opportunities of now picking up a stake before the ’chasing season ends quite a number of cross-coun-try candidates are expected to put in an appearance at Marton towards the end of the present month with the object of competing between the flags on September 1. Other jumping events which figure on the attractive programme are the Hack Hurdles, of 160sovs., 1% miles, and the Hack Steeplechase, of ISOsovs., two miles. The Electric Hack Handicap, of 140 sovs., six furlongs, Tutaenui Hack Welter, of 150sovs.. seven furlongs, and the Trial Hack Plate, of ISOsovs., five furlongs for horses that have never won a flat race of 25sovs. or over at the time of starting, complete a varied programme.
