CANTERBURY.

Amythas Enjoying a Well-earned Spell—Cutts Bros.’ Fine Batch of Juveniles — Burrangong’s Oamaru Cup Victory—Notes on the North Otago Fixture. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. As a result of the refusal of the transport workers to ship horses for the North Island, Coalition, Seadown, Kohu, Master Strowan, Waimai, Gang Awa’, Bonnie Maid, and Hetaua are still located at Riccarton. where they will have to remain till a settlement is effected.

J. Lowe intended racing Coalition and Seadown at Ellerslie, but his prospects of getting there seem anything but bright. It is quite likely that he will take the pair to Dunedin, where both appear to be favourably treated. When on Tuesday the Seamen’s and other unions decided to declare all racehorses “black” doubts were felt as to whether the Riccarton contingent would be able to get down to Oamaru. Enquiries at the Railway Department elicited the information that there was no bai- to carrying horses on the South Island railways, so evidently the strike only

prevails in the North Island and interisland steamships. For some time it has been reported that Mr. Easton intended sending Amythas to Australia for the big spring meetings. This idea is scouted by the gelding’s trainer, F. D. Jones, who contends that his charge is badly in need of a spell. To have Amythas fit for early spring racing he would have to be kept in work nearly all the winter, and such a course does not appeal to his trainer. In the meantime the Marlborough Stakes victor is on the easy list. Gloaming and Karo continue to get through light tasks, and it is quite on the cards that Mason will take them to Sydney for the winter. Mason is also handling several very , promising rising two-year-olds with the idea of sorting out the best for his , proposed Australian trip. Cutts Bros, have a very fine batch of juveniles getting through the rudiments of their education. Two of their number —Winning Hit, by Autumnus —Winning Way, and Giant Killer, by Autumnus —Brave Heart — have recently been added to the list. Wrestler continues to train on satisfactorily at Riccarton, and is fast getting into form. A few mornings ago he showed plenty of brilliancy in a gallop over four furlongs with

Clean Sweep. A few days after the Royal meeting Melee developed a big abscess on the jaw, which subsequently burst. This may account for his poor showing in the Royal Handicap, and it certainly prejudiced his Oamaru prospects. The North Island trainer J. T. Jamieson took his team of four to Oamaru, and will go on to Wingatui for the winter meeting there. A recent addition to R. Longley’s team is the Cymbiform gelding Darkie Sam. So far he has been an arrant failure on the race tracks, •ut he may improve with a change of quarters. The Boniform gelding Dal Signo, in J. McCombe’s stable, has been in a bad way of late, while several other Riccarton-trained horses are also suffering from a form of strangles. After his poor showings at Ashburton and Timaru, Burrangong’s success in the Oamaru Cup came as a great surprise to. followers of form. Even so he was strongly supported in well-informed circles, and won with the greatest ease from Kilkee and Torfreda. Despite a substantial rise in weight he was successful also in the President’s Handicap on Friday, Kilkee again following him home, Burrangong is a most uncertain customer. but it is quite . evident that he is back to his best form. Radial put up a fine performance in winning the Stewards’ Handicap at Oamaru under 9.13. He was always well placed, and when it came to business quickly settled the pretentions of Mortham and Pyjama. On returning to the paddock he was slightly lame, and had to forfeit his second day engagements. The Riccarton-trained Will Oak-
