RACING AT RICCARTON.

C.J.C. GREAT AUTUMN. SASANOF MAKES GOOD. CONCLUDING DAY’S SPORT. (From Our Christchurch Correspondent) The weather was delightfully fine for the conclusion of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s. autumn meeting. Though the attendance showed a . marked falling off it was well ahead of that present on previous years. The track was again, particularly fast, and though not asked to do his best, Amythas cut out a fresh record of Imin. 26 2-ssec. for the Challenge Stakes. Speculation was very brisk, the day’s investments reaching £51,235, as against £38,152 on the corresponding day last year. There were only five starters in the Peerswick Hurdles, Hylans being supported down to extravagant odds on. At the very first obstacle, Prince Delaware and Trickery, who were bracketed, rah off and took no further part in the contest. After Sea Blue had done his best for nearly a mile, Bombproof and Hylans ran past him, and as the home straight was entered, Hylans had his opponent’s measure. Bombproof struggled on gamely, but could not extend the topweight, who won very comfortably by nearly two lengths. Delight, with H. Gray in the saddle, was backed down to odds on for the Autumn Nursery Handicap. She was

always well placed, and at the end of half a mile was with Fabrinade, who had made all the early running. At the distance Delight drew away, and easily stalling off late challenges by Bebehead and Little River, scored very comfortably by a length and a half. Listening Post finished up fourth, and Caricature next. Delight’s performance was a brilliant one, for she compassed the six furlongs in Imin. 12 2-ssec., even though the lot opposed to her were only second class. With the exception of Sasanof and Kilmoon, it was a secondary lot that lined up for the Great Autumn Handicap. In their preliminaries nothing moved better than Sunart and Night RaicLer. Sasanof was not extended, while both Kilmoon and Battle Song went scratchily. From a good send-off, Battle Song took charge, but at the six furlongs post Warlike was bowling along freely in the lead from Battle Song and Night Raider. Here Sasanof, who had been running last, made a forward move, and took up fifth position. There was little change in the order as the top turn was negotiated, where Warlike was still in charge from Battle Song and Night Raider. It was not till well within the distance that Sasanof put in his claim. Then he came along in racehorse style and had the opposition well beaten. Kilmoon put in a final run after apparently being beaten, and finished almost as'well as the leader. Night Raider ran his best race' to date in getting third place, but Warlike could not go the pace over the final stages. Altogether it was -a contest of a good one with a poor lot to beat. Little interest was taken in the Addington Plate, which attracted a field of 11 moderates. Starlike looked to have fair prospects till they turned into the home straight, where Foo Chow and Satisfaction appeared to be going strong. In the run home Foo Chow scored decisively by a length from Satisfaction, who ran a solid race and headed Kilcalm for third place by a length. With the late scratchings of Winter Wind and Chrysostom, the 28th Challenge Stakes took on little interest excepting as to what would be second and third. The two bearers of the yellow jacket (Golden Bubble and Right and Left) made a solid pace till within two furlongs from home. There Amythas, on whom Campbell had ridden a patient race, dashed to the front, and soon had the result in safe keeping. It was an excellent showing on the winner’s part, as without being seriously called on he covered the seven furlongs in the record time for the race of Imin. 26 2-ssec. Right and Left’s display was disappointing, and detracted from the two-year-old form of the meeting.

Chimera, with H. Gray in the saddle, was backed down to a very short price for the Templeton Handicap. She was always in a handy position, and at the finish scored comfortably from Bon Spec. The latter showed a rare turn of speed in the early stages, but could not sustain it over the concluding furlong, while Brackenfield, the favourite, made his task almost hopeless by getting badly away.

Backers had a rare surprise sprung on them by the victory of Sedd-el-Bahr in the Final Handicap. Early Dawn made most of the running, and even at the distance appeared to hold winning prospects. At this stage Radial, Macduff and Some Kid were being ridden to keep their positions, and Sedd-el-Bahr could be seen putting in good work on the outside of the field. Sustaining his effort, the southerner had Early Dawn’s measure within the, distance, and won an interesting race by a length. The results were: —
