HAMILTON RACING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. THE OPENING DAY. MELEE WINS THE CUP. This exceedingly popular sporting club commenced its annual summer meeting on Saturday under all-round conditions which made for success. The weather was fine, the attendance a record one, the fields of good average (just on eleven per race),,while speculation averaged over £6600 per race, or a grand total of £52,894, which is £10,679 more than on the first day of last year. Horses were attracted from different parts of the North Island and from Canterbury by the excellent prize money, and were altogether of a useful all-round class, with some green, unready or inferior ones in a few of the events, but many that in one department or other of racing should pay their way. Size was one of the features with some, of the horses competing. A few looked on the rough side t but most had a well-trained appearance and several could be termed “classy.” The racing was very interesting, some good finishes resulting, and closelv-contested events for the most part followed Mr. McManemin’s work. Mr. J. Cameron, from Feilding, filled the judge’s box, and had more than one ver.” close battle to decide for place honours. Mr. C. O’Connor at the other end as starter. played his part well, and only in a few instances was an odd horse or two noticeably at fault. The totalisator staff of Messrs. Blomfield and Co., under the supervision of Mr. C. F. Mark, worked well, and under somewhat improved conditions achieved the record turnover for the South Auckland district and the club. The enclosures -were never so heavily taxed with the motor traffic, and there appeared to be acres of private motor conveyances lined up within the club’s grounds, while tile roads outside were lined with those plying for business mostly. Some of the taxis came from very long distances. The owners of most of the horses racing were present or represented. The winner of the 'first thousand pound Cup run for in the Waikato turned up in the Canterbury owned and bred Melee, by Martian from Formless, a sire and dam bred by the late Mr. G. G. Stead, whose son Gerald owns the winner and was present to see him run. The report that Mr. Stead had purchased a property in the Waikato is premature, so that owner desired us to state. His win was as well received as if he had been a leading settler. The three placed horses —Melee, Punka, and First Salute —are each visitors, Punka being a Canterbury-bred one and First Salute owned in the Hawke's Bay district, but bred in Auckland and leased to his trainerowner. It was a fine race with some changes in running. King Lupin set out to make matters merry, but the lightweight Active went with him and the pair had a fairly good lead for more than half the journey, which Tabasco and Tinopai decreased to a couple of lengths a little further on, where Melee was handy to this pair. Tabasco went on in front with Melee handy round the top bend, where Punka (the favourite) and First Salute (the second fancy, almost equally supported) were right up, also Royal Irish. Melee landed into the short straight with Tabasco, but Punka and then First Salute headed Tabasco and closed on Melee a little, but ridden right out Mr. Stead’s gelding won by two lengths, and the judge made half a head between the other pair, deciding in favour of Punka, though many had ticked off First Salute as second. Royal Irish and Athens 11. were some few lengths away, fourth and fifth respectively. The time was 2min. 34 2-ssec., which is consistent with the previous form of the placed horses over the same distance. The 61b. additional weight put on First Salute for his win at Takapuna just about turned the tables against him as regards the winner. Kilrush is understood to have gone amiss on the eve of the race, and his scratching came as a surprise to those who had not heard of the mishap, as he was expected to be about favourite a few days before. Tinopai, King Lupin, Active and Mountain Gold were quite used up by the severity of the pace set. The Trial Handicap, with which the proceedings commenced, brought out sixteen starters. Golden Crozier, the favourite, was galloped on early and had a hind leg stripped to the tendon of skin, and looked in a bad way as the result. The second favourite, the

Demosthenes mare Demoiselle, was led with the others at a clinkiig pace by Mr. R. Hannon’s filly Awareka, who could not see the distance out — indeed, was gathered up after leading for about five furlongs or a little more. She was third selection. Waikaiea was running second for most of the way, and eventually 'finished third, the Marble Arch mare Isingarch coming fast from behind and snatching victory from Demoiselle by a neck. Ma Copper, who ran his best race, was fourth, with Colour-Sergeant fifth. Awareka carried a 51b allowance, and Demoiselle Inquisitive 51b., Bunday 41b., Ruby Paul 41b. and Waikarea 51b. overweights. Isingarch was fourth selection and paid a useful dividend.

Torfreda, whose forte when herself is brilliancy, was made favourite for the Claudelands Handicap, but she was moving short and she never had a look in with Ring Lupin, who is very well just now, and the course and distance suiting him he led all the way and won by two lengths, Torfreda only beating Kilbeggan by less than a length, the other starters being all of a heap, handy, with the exception of Daytime, the third fancy, who was some lengths off, last. The Tamahere Stakes provided the first handicap of the season in the north between two and three-year-olds, with the bigger proportion of two-year-olds, and a visiting one, running by permission of the president of the Racing Conference (Sir G'. Clifford) in the changed entry of Mr. Herbert, on account of a family bereavement of the owner, was made favourite. This was Blackmail, by Bezonian—Historiette, aim people were falling over themselves to back it, Clonmel being second favourite, and Jolie Princess and Miss Muriel (bracketed, though running in different interests, because of a contingency in each sale by their breeder) were the third highest total pooled in investments on the race. Jolie Princess led practically into the straight, Jaffna running in second place for some part of the trip, with Rieuse, a visitor, handy. Blackmail, handled with great confidence, put in her claim, and finishing brilliantly won by a length and a-half from Rieuse (who is by Finland from Landrail), with Jolie Princess about the same distance away, third, and Night Time, finishing best of the three-year-olds, fourth. This race was run Isec. slower than the Claudelands Handicap, but both were fast-run races, and showed that the course, never so well covered with grass and looking very green, was fast. Blackmail is a bit of classy goods, and looks it. Oakleigh, no doubt better than generally supposed, was made favourite in a moderate 'field of four for the Waimai Handicap Hurdles, and duly won, Entente Cordiale, somewhat stale perhaps, being ten or a dozen lengths away, second, and Arab King, who will improve with education, nearly the same distance off, third. Matapara, the only other starter, was a long way back. The Karamu Welter Handicap was picked on Takapuna running as one of the best things of the day for Arch Salute, brother to First Salute, and after running behind his field for half the distance he then asserted himself and reached the head of affairs in the straight, Rekanui, having led most of the way towards that stage, also being passed by Corregidor (whose second race it was) and Fabriquette. Te Oro finished fifth. Arch Salue won by nearly three-parts of a length, and less than that was the margin between Corregidor and Fabriquette.

The presence of the English-bred horse Arrowsmith led to the interest and made amends for the smallness of the field for the Cambridge Handicap, which had but seven starters for the 600sovs. 80-Peep (last year’s winner) and Bindle were pretty evenly and well backed, and Arrowsmith, who has' rounded into shape with racing and is now freely talked of as a nice horse, had only a few hundred ten-shilling investments less than the pair. King Abbey, who led the field from a good start, had the best following of the others, but he only lasted in the lead for between three and four furlongs. It was a closely compact field towards the bend. Then Arrowsmith came and led into the straight and was two clear lengths or more in front half a furlong from home. He was going so nicely that it looked all over, and he eventually won, though probably all out. by three-parts of a length from Bindle, who beat 80-Peep half a length, with Kilbeggan nearly three lengths away. The time, lmin. 13

2-ssec., is very smart considering the weight (9.5), and the distance on the course has not been run as fast with weight previously, if at all, Spanner’s go last year, when he beat BoPeep, being about the best, certainly the best for a three-year-old. The popularity of welter races or races with a 7.7 minimum was shown in the last race, the Hautapu Handicap, which brought together twentythree starters, which must have been pleasing to the executive of the Hamilton Racing Club, one of the first to advocate a minimum of 7st. The race was cleverly won by Salvaless, the third favourite, by over two lengths. She was always prominent, and so was General Advance, who got second, but Tama-a-roa, who was third, was the actual leader until nearing the straight, where Miss Leslie, Explode and Ruatara (the favourite) appeared to be well up also, the two last-named failing over the last part. Allowances were claimed as under: Tuipa 51b., and Magneto 34b., and the overweights were: No Bother 12b., Colour-Sergeant 61b., Excel 51b., Auldana 1%1b., Bunday 81b., and Octoplete and Delysian 71b. each. Some of the investments were very small out of the £7298 10s. pool. The best dividend of the day was a little over £9.

CONCLUDING DAY. ROYAL IRISH CAPTURES WAIKATO HANDICAP. Though there was a little rain on Sunday, enough to lay the dust on the roads and freshen the grass, Monday opened fine and remained so until about half an hour before the first race, ail the riders receiving a heavy wetting while waiting at the post for the start. The committee, with consideration, had each horseman supplied with a hot cup of tea on returning to scale, the best they could do for them under the circumstances, and the act was duly appreciated. Rain continued mistiiy at intervals. There was a considerable drop in the attendance, as many could only afford the one day, and Auckland city folk did not return in quite such force as on the Saturday. . The correct card showed that there would be at last two large fields for minor prizes, but there were also several below the average. Most of the horses that faced the barrier on Saturday were in evidence again, and there were a few that were not then seen out, some of them new to the game. Veterans are usually found at these meetings, and the shapely old Blue Light grey gelding Bluestone figured in the card for the Tauwhare Handicap after a long absence from the racing arena. It, however, seems almost a pity to start the hero of so many good fights going again, though he might win a race- in the winter when the going is soft. The grey shade is giving place more and more to the white, but the old fellow, though brought to the meeting, was not called upon to run, neither was Prince Charleroi, and Wolomai was another late withdrawal, Independence also. Monopole started for the first time at the meeting,, looking lusty and well, and he should be handy for autumn and winter racing. It was unfortunate that rain fell, but still the sport was interesting, and the soft going no doubt gave some of the winners and place-getters a better chance of earning their keep than if the going had been hard. There were quite a number of useful dividends during the afternoon, that on Gold Plane in the Ruakura Stakes being the best, running to something over a score. Demoiselle, by Demosthenes, had a long overdue win in the Frankton Handicap, and, like Waikorea and No Bother, ran up to form in the big field of twenty-four with which the business commenced, and the first-named pair carried most money. Demoiselle only got up to win by a length, and No Bother, who was a very big outsider, only just got cut out of second place. Ma Copper, left out of the card, was fourth, and Lady Petain ran up to form also. Ring Lupin was favourite for the Tawhare Handicap, with Torfreda. and Kilbeggan next, but Caballero won after a good race from Torfreda and Ring Lupin. Oakleigh. the favourite in the Matangi Hurdle Handicap, was leading Entente Cordiale slightly two hurdles from home when he fell, and Entente Cordiale won by half a dozen lengths or more from Arab King, Seville being third, Silver Pine running badly.

The Waikato Handicap was a good betting race as between Daytime, First Salute and Melee, supported in order, Te Ora, Corregidor and Royal Irish being the next best fancied. The last-named played his part so well that the sway-backed aged son of Soult won with a length to spare from Melee, who lasted long enough to beat Waiuta for second money, First Salute a handy fourth. There were thirteen runners for the Taupiri Hack Handicap, Explode, Tama-a-roa, and Marble Slab (whose rider had a 51b. allowance) being the best backed. Miss Leslie, who has raced prominently all through the season, had a fair following, and she cut down Explode, who had only a little to spare from the stronglyfinishing Monopole. Marble Slab and Hypothesis were close up next in order. A solid backing came for Blackmail in the Ruakura Stakes, Jolie Princess and Miss Muriel (coupled) being a little better supported than the consistent Night Time. A good race resulted in the three-year-old fillv Gold Plane, by Merry Moments, being tackled by Lovelight, and both defeated Blackmail, who was gaining over the concluding stages of the race, but was unable to give the weight. Jaffna made the pace until nearing the straight. The Kirikiriroa Handicap only brought out a trio, and they were each well backed, Bindle, the favourite, getting up inside the distance and winning by half a length from Queen Abbey, who beat 80-Peep by a little more, Bindle simply outstaying the other pair and repeating his form when second to Arrowsmith on the first day. Another good race brought the meeting to a close, Arch Salute’s consistency standing to him, but he had to be ridden hard to beat both Kereone and Glenspire, who were within heads of each other, by a long neck. Fabriquette was favourite, Arch Salute second fancy, and Kereone next in demand. Thus the meeting terminated. From the president (Mr. Geo. Vercoe) down, all the stewards and committeemen and officials worked to make the meeting the success it was, and when the end of the day came it was seen that the totalisator turnover had reached to £41,347 10s., as against £41,093 10s. on the second day of last year, thus bringing the total for the two days to the sum of £94,241 10s., an increase over the figures of the 1919 meeting of £10,933. An increase in receipts all round was fully expected, as the bill-of-fare provided an attractive programme, the best of any of the so-called country clubs, and, indeed, better than some of the metropolitan ones. The meeting was almost in every way worthy of the Waikato, but the jumping strength of the districts thereof was not well represented. There were horses racing in flat races that would be more likely to win over the obstacles, judging from their appearance,’ if they were put to the game. The results were: — FRANKTON HANDICAP of 200sovs. Six furlongs. 3 — T. .1. Stewart’s blk m Demoiselle, lyrs, by Demosthenes — Golden Ball. 9.4 (Hewitt) 1 2. —T. Santorini seems a pretty good sort of hack. He is by defunct San Fran from a Renown mare, and gallops fast, as Taranaki form indicates.
