Artilleryman, winner of the V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup, is expected to have something in the nature of a walk-over for at least one, if not both the V.R.C. and A.J.C. St. Legers. He is said to be working satisfactorily. It was the racing that fitted him for his big Melbourne Cup contest which he carried out so well. Richmond Main may only opppse him in one of these events, but as he met with an accident there is some doubt as to whether he will be able to reproduce his best form five weeks hence. Whether Surveyor will be taken over is open to doubt, and though he may be better now than in the spring he had a hard time of it then, and one would expect his owner to try and pick up something in the Dominion if he intends going on racing the light-fieshed son of Nassau during the autumn months.
