WELLINGTON NOTES.

(By

"Lorgnette.”)

WELLINGTON, November 17

The Allan Wilkie Company are doing fine business at the Grand Opera House. The opening production, “The Silver King,” ran for five nights to big houses. It was originally intended to stage the drama for six nights, but Mr. Wilkie has decided on giving Wellington playgoers a chance of criticising his company in as many plays as he can stage durin °- + he season. Therefore Stanley Houghton’s successful play “Hindle Wakes” was presented on Saturday evening last. “Hindle Wakes” is a sincere human drama with the breath of inspiration. It is a problem play that,

deals with one of the most vital questions of the day. Mr. Wilkie in the part of Nathaniel Jeffcote gave a great impersonation of the character, his Lancashire dialect being simply perfect. Miss Hunter-Watts never struck a false note in her portrayal of Fanny Hawthorne. For the remaining nights of the season “School for Scandal,” “She Stoops to. Con- -

quer,” “Trilby,” “The Midnight Wedding” and “Camille” will be staged. Something in the nature of a surprise was sprung upon Mr. E. B. Vance, the genial secretary, and a recent benedict, at the supper given at the conclusion of “The Mikado” season by the Wellington Amateur Society. Mr. Wyatt, on behalf of the chorus, presented him with a handsome gift. Mr. Vance replied in happy mood, and specially mentioned those members of the society whose work was not done in “the limelight”—notably Mr. W. Fraser, the society’s treasurer. At the last performance of “The Mikado” Mr. Herbert F. W r ood, who so successfully interpreted the role of Nanki Poo, was handed a laurel as a mark of appreciation for his artistic performance.
