WAVERLEY-WAITOTARA RACING CLUB.

annual meeting. ORATRESS WINS CUP. (By Telegraph —Wanganui Correspondent.) WAVERLEY, Monday. The Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club’s annual race meeting was held to-day in lovely weather in the presence of a record attendance. The meeting was the most successful ever held by the club. The course was in excellent order, and good fields were seen out in most of the events, while the racing was very interesting. The management of the sport was good, though there was a lot of delay in making up the tote figures, the races being considerably delayed in consequence, the last event being over half an hour late in starting. Mr. W. Macfarlane, secretary, and his assistants had everything in smooth working order, and the programme was got through in a creditable manner, while Mr. A. Morse, starter, was fairly successful at the barrier. Speculation was very brisk, the sum of £35,602 being put through the machine, as against £25,720 last year, an increase of £9905. Carmel Arch won the Flying Handicap in fine style, just beating the veteran Croesus in the very fast time of lmin. 14sec. Oratress ■ won the big event like a good one, cutting out the mile and a quarter in 2min. 8 2-ssec. after being chopped out at the half-mile post. Zola scored an easy win in the Hurdles. Karero paid the best price of the day in the Jackson Memorial Stakes, which he won from a big field, just beating Tempo. Racing opened with the Brewer Handicap, for which only five started, Croesus being made a very hot favourite, Carmel Arch being most fancied of the others. From a splendid start Hushman made play from Croesus for a furlong, when Croesus took charge, but at the half distance Carmel Arch was in front from the favourite, and led into the straight, winning nicely from the topweight. Ahika was a fair third, and then came Hushman. The winner cut out the distance in the fast time of lmin. Msec.

There were eleven starters in the Morton Memorial Maiden, for which Tame Fox was made a strong order, Self Alliance also being very heavily backed. From a straggling start Crystal Palace made the early running, but Tame Fox and Self Alliance were together in front at the bend, and the favourite came away in the straight and won comfortably by a length and a-quarter, with two lengths between second and third. Ngakanui

was fourth. Rekapoto was badly left at the start.

There were only five starters in the Hurdles, Zola being entrusted with most money, though there was good backing for Wakaruku and Austin. The latter led for a mile, when Zola took charge and went on to win easily.

Twelve lined up in the Wilson Stakes, the four-furlong flutter, Ruddy being the popular pick, though Vance was well backed. The favourite won nicely after a good race with Passin’ Through, with Potana a fair third and just in front of Master Curran. Vance did not begin well and was never prominent.

Detroit and Carmel Arch declined their engagements in the Cup, leaving seven to face the starter. All Over finished up a better favourite than Depredation, both carrying well over £lOOO on their respective numbers. From a good start Hushman made the pace for the first half-mile from Oratress and Perfect Day. Going down the back All Over ran up second to Hushman, Oratress being interfered with and losing her position. Depredation rushed to the front at the bend, and looked all over a winner, but Oratress came again and was on terms at the bottom of the straight. Going on well, the Demosthenes mare won nicely from First Salute, which came fast over the last quarter mile and beat Depredation out of second money. All Over finished last, Perfect Day being fourth. There were fourteen starters in the Flying Handicap, Nemaline, Farce and Halcyon being backed in that order. Toddy made the running to the turn for home, where Nemaline was always handy and got in front and won by a length from a big outsider in Ninatau, which just beat Signorella, who is in the same stable as the winner.

There were nine starters in the Moumahaki Stakes, in which Simon finished up a slightly better favourite than Arrowfield, First Salute being most fancied of the others. From a fair start Simon was quickly out, making the pace from Coral Queen to the turn for home, where First Salute put in his claim and eventually won comfortably by three lengths, Arrowfield being a neck away, third, with Engari fourth. There were fifteen starters in the concluding event, Tempo being made favourite, with Ruddy and Passin’ Through most fancied of the others. The winner turned up in Karero, the Maniapoto gelding just beating the favourite. Ruddy got away very badly, but finished fast and got third, with Vance fourth.
