DIFFICULTIES OF DOUBLE TOTE. The pathetie appeals to the Government to sanction the double-event totalisator are mere by-play (says the turf writer of the “Dunedin Star”), for they are in the ecstatic mood, and take no account of the practical difficulties, which are: (1) That the new system -would involve the reconstruction -of the machines, which there is no time to do in the spring season; (2) that double machines on the course only would not lessen the purely local betting, which represents three-fourths of the transactions; and (3) that the people at large are fairly treated by the established bookmakers. I am, and always have been, an out-and-out totalisator supporter, and as such against the bookmaking system, but I can’t stand the impractical nonsense that was recently talked in the House when the' subject was under consideration.
