A RACING AND AGRICULTURAL ENTERPRISE.

Faith in the future-of Levin and its agricultural, pastoral and sporting life has been displayed by the settlers there in securing seventy acres of land in the vicinity of the township for £4500, which sum was, during last week, raised by debentures for its acquisition for racing and for show purposes. The Horowhenua Racing Club and the Agricultural and Pastoral Association have thus joined forces, and will make one property serve a double purpose, as many clubs and associations of the same character have done in other parts of the Dominion. The Horowhenua Racing Club is one that has had its drawbacks in the past, but is sure to take a more prominent place as time goes on amongst the country clubs, and is fortunate in being centrally situated on the Manawatu-Wellington main line.

TRIBUTE TO DECEASED SPORTSMEN. At the annual meeting of the Manawatu R.C., the president (Mr. J. Goring Johnston) stated that the club had extended their sympathy by votes of condolence from the committee to the relatives of the following prominent men in the world of sport who had been removed through the fearful epidemic which swept this country, and from other causes: —The late Mr. D. Buick, M.P., for years a member of the committee, and patron of the club; the late Mr. W. H. Hartgill, the well-known and highly-respected judge to the club for many years; the late Mr. Rupert Morrison, a wellknown Wairarapa sportsman, and a member of the club; the late Mr. A. E. Torstonson, a well-known resident and member of the club. “We also,” continued the president, “have to regret from other causes the lamentable death of the late Mr. E. H. Morrah, for many years manager of the Bank of Australasia, and our banker, a gentleman who rendered valuable assistance to this club. During the war, sons of the following members have laid down their lives: Messrs. <H. Gillies. J. Knight, W. Park, T. Childs, Capt. G'. A. Preece, Messrs. S. R. Lancaster, and F. Robinson. Messrs. R. P. Abraham, J. Best, B. J. Jacobs, G. C. Keeble and J. W. Rutherford were away on active service with the forces. Messrs. J. H. P. Strang and H. N. Watson, both of whom were awarded the Croix de Guerre, joined the Ambulance Corps in France, and saw a great deal of active service. Mrs. Hartgill has kindly presented the club with a photograph of her late husband, for which we have tendered our sincere thanks. This photograph is now hung on the walls of the committee room.
