DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.

WINTER MEETING OPENED. PALLADIO WINS STEEPLECHASE. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting was opened at Wingatui on the King’s Birthday in fine weather, the attendance constituting a. new record for the course. With a large number of visiting horses to assist at the fixture, some highly interesting contests were witnessed, only two first favourites prevailing during the afternoon. The principal race, the Otago Steeplechase, was won by Mr. W. Swale’s Palladio, who outstayed the favourite, Vascular, who was defeated by a couple of lengths. The contest was marred to some extent by a number of the horses coming to grief, while Nita and Morecambe took the wrong course. Tin Soldier accounted for the Birthday Handicap after a great race with the favourite, Eleus, who suffered defeat by a long head. The totalisator receipts amounted to £34,312 10s., as against £22,977 10s. last year. The results were: — TRIAL HURDLE HANDICAP of 200 sovs. One mile and a-half. 1— J. The Otago Hurdles resulted in a surprise victory for Jeannot, who, nicely handled by the ex-Auckland horseman, J. Tilsley, defeated the favourite, Vascular, by a short head after a splendid race. During the afternoon the judicial stewards inquired into the cause of Red Admiral falling in the Winter Welter Handicap on the opening- day, and after hearing statements from R. McLellan (the rider), I. C. Tilson and W. Robinson (who were on Wild Pilgrim and Kilkee respectively), were satisfied that the accident was caused through Red Admiral’s rider letting him run on the heels of the horse in front. The stewards admonished McLellan, warning him to use more caution in future. At the last meeting- of the committee of the Timaru Trotting Club a letter was received from the Trotting Association stating that at the conference the question as to the best method of starting would be again discussed. It had been suggested that the yard system should be given a trial. An animated discussion took place on the matter. It was said that this club had had no experience of the yard system, and consequently could not express an authoritative opinion upon it. It was also said that the seconds system of starting had proved quite satisfactory, and that the question was one which should be left to owners and trainers rather than to the trotting clubs or the Trotting Association. It was finally decided that the club’s delegate should be given a free hand at the conference. W. Orange, the Auckland trotting expert reinsman and rider, lately met with an accident whilst handling Alf. McKinney at a southern trotting meeting. He was sent to the hospital. Jopson, A. Julian’s head man, is keeping both Mint Boy (a maiden trotter by Normintson) and Ruanui at work at Epsom. Miss Rolfe and Eccentric, the old grey pacer, have gone into winter quarters at Waiuku. N. Cunningham’s numerous string of trotters and pacers are on the easy list. He may take a couple of horses to Gisborne or perhaps to the Christchurch winter trotting fixtures. Lord Lonsdale was submitted to auction on Friday at the Haymarket, but did not come up to the reserve and therefore remains in Mr. Giesen’s stable.
