Crenides Rejoins Active Brigade— Preparations for Winter Gatherings —Bon Reve Shaping Well—Teka and Sweet Corn Display Aptitude Over Fences —Multum’s Cross-coun-try Engagements at Gisborne—J. Oldfield's Team. NAPIER,' Monday. The Hawke’s Bay District Committee met at Hastings on Saturday, there being present: Messrs. J. S. McLeod (chairman). J. H. Colebourne, C. L. Mackersey, P. Hunter, H. A. Russell, H. Hassall, T. E. Whelch, and Major J. Armstrong. Correspondence was received and dealt with from the N.Z. Racing Conference and the Waipawa and Tolaga Racing Clubs. Licenses were issued as follows: —Trainers: R. Tautau. Jockeys: H. Griffith, L. E. Goodwin, C. H. Hallinan, E. L. Wilson, and A. C. Tricklebank. Gentlemen riders’ certificates: L. R. Carver, H. S. Groome, W. R. Ward, J. Hanley, F. Evans, and J. Farrow. The committee of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club also met at-Hastings on Saturday, the following being present: Messrs. J. S. McLeod (chairman), J. H. Colebourne, P. Hunter, H. Hassall, T. H. Lowry, H. A. Russell, E. J. White, J. O’Neill, G - . Ebbett and M. Johnson. An apology was received from Mr. W. G. Stead. Various correspondence was received and dealt with, and sub-committees appointed. The starting time of the first race at the winter meeting was fixed at 11.30 a.m., the secretary to make enquiries regarding special trains. Resolut’ons adopted by the Course Committee were approved. The financial statement was read, and accounts amounting to £368 Os. 2d. were passed for payment. Mr. J. Tracey, the well-known local gentleman rider, returned to Napier from the front last week, after nearly three years’ service.. He looks bright and hearty, and informed me that he hopes to be again back in the saddle in the very near future. Always in the top-notch hole as regards condition, Tracey is sure to find a big demand upon his services where this class of horseman is required. Crenides, after a short let up, has again joined the team controlled by T. Quinlivan at Otatara. This mentor has finished breaking in the younger full-brother to Demagogue, and the youngster is now in work. T. E. Whelch, of the Lake Station, Wanstead, is sending down to Greenmeadows Styrax, Manhattan and Merrie Lad. The trio, who will be under the direction of A. C. Plummer, will be located at Mr. C. E. Twist’s quarters at Greenmeadows, and are to be prepared for business on the hurryup at Napier Park. Bon Reve is making good in his essays over the big fences at Hastings. The son of Bon'form and Dreamer appears as if he will have no difficulty in getting amongst the stake earners in the near future. Last season Bon Reve won £2320 in prize money. The coming two-year-old full-bro-ther to Almoner (Boniform —Cassock)has had the appellafon of Tout Bon bestowed upon him, and the rising two-year-old filly by Demosthenes — Lily White has been christened Truthful. The pair are amongst the string at present under the guidance of G. Jones, at Greenmeadows. St. Omer and Goldshine have arrived at Napier l Park, where they will be put through their preparations by S. Lindsay. Sensitive, Woodlark, Teka, Sweet Corn, and the six-year-old full-brother to Audax are a quintette putting in attractive work over the obstacles at Napier Park. Sweet Corn for a new chum has given some meritorious displays, and when she gets seasoned she will assuredly prove a tough customer to beat at the lepping portion of the industry. The brother to Audax is a rare cut of a jumper, for be has power and lift all through his conformation, and though he is as yet quite in the verdant stage, his essays mark him out as the makings of some horse at the jumping business. Teka jumps clever and fast, and a horse of his class is certain to be one of the “hard to overthrow” in hurdle events. Sensitive, who is the most seasoned of the lot, fences clean and rapidly, a remark which also applies to Woodlark. Sansterre and Woolahara are both being schooled over the pony hurdles at Hastings, but their displays have not been noted by any great amount of ability. Practice will probably make proficient, and in their case there is plenty of room for improvement.

The steeplechase fences are being erected on the course proper at Napier Park, and, as of yore, are neatly constructed, without any trickiness apparent in them. The only horse to be schooled so far over the steeplechase obstacles at Napier Park is Multum. The son of Multifid has been going along the right way in his attempts. He was shipped to Gisborne on Friday night to fulfil engagements at the approaching winter fixture of the Gisborne Racing Club. Rangi Thompson has been engaged to pilot him, and that means that he will want for nothing on the score of horsemanship. Union Jack and Ormesby have been in satisfactory work over the steeplechase country on the test-out at Hastings.

Trainer J. H. Jefferd has had a couple of rising two-year-olds on the tracks at Hastings of late. One is a full-brother to Golden Bubble (Absurd —Catchfly), while the other is a. filly by Absurd —Carmania.

Lord ’Astolat has not been asked to do a great deal of late, but he will shortly be spun along in earnest. He is a half-brother by Advance to Whakaheki and Ohinewairua, and is being got ready for the fray by F. Quinlivan. L. Wilson is imparting information to a couple of coming two-year-olds in the shape of Mountain Chief, a son of Mountain Knight and Mongonui, and Sunny Smile, a daughter of Sunny Lake and Prank. K. Quinlivan is handling a yearling son of Feramorz and Gazalie. He is the property of Mr. C. Haldane, who also has in Quinlivan’s establishment Honey Bee and a rising two-year-old son of Demosthenes and Mocking Bird. •J. Oldfield last week started to break in a five-year-old son of Wooloomooloo and Merry Kate. The other members of his team consist of Multum, Sweet Corn, Heather Sprig and Fife and Drum. The latter pair are by the imported sire Heather Mixture, out of La Sabine and Amusement, respectively. Heather Sprig is therefore a half-brother to Pearl Marie< Loreto, Hexton and Sabine, while Fife and Drum claims halfsisterhood to Chortle and Chuckle.
