“For services rendered to his country and to the British Army,” Harry Lauder has been knighted. At a luncheon party in Sydney someone asked, “Is it to be Sir Harry or Sir Henry?” The knight looked shocked. “Everybody knows me as Harry! Why, it wouldn’t be me if I was Sir Henry. I was christened ‘Henry,’ but for the last 20 years in signing contracts I’ve always signed ‘Harry.’ I’ll be ‘Harry’ always, to everybody!” * * • • Mrs. E. J. Righton gave a most enjoyable afternoon tea in Wellington for Miss Carrie Lanceley, who is at present touring New Zealand with her musical company. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G.) and Mrs. Luke were present and made happy little speeches of welcome. • • • • Mr. Charles M. Berkeley, “the irrepressible,” after launching the fortunes of the Royal Comics in the most masterly manner, left on Monday for the south, taking Palmerston North, Wanganui and Masterton en route. The next big spot is Christchurch, Where the company opens on June 5, with “Maytime.” Mr. Teddy Elliott, the well-re-membered ventriloquist with the Smart Set of a few years back, has a concert company of his own in England now and is doing excellently. The “Pronouns”, he styles his band of entertainers.
