AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB. CONCLUDING DAY. GAZIQUE WINS CHIEF EVENT. The autumn meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club wound up in brilliant weather for the time of year on Wednesday of last week. Though it was municipal election day that did not keep very many away from the scene, the attendance being very good. The train arrangements were of the best, and there were no complaints on that score. The -fields were small in several of the events, but the average was fair and speculation was keen, the totalisator turnover reaching to £37,884, bringing the amount for the two days to £83,784.* There was only one day last autumn, but as compared with the autumn of 1917 there was 'w increase of £5538 10s. The meeting was well conducted by Mr. H. Hayr, secretary, and staff, and there were no complaints about the totalisator management. Not so the catering, however. An improvement in this department is wanted. The course was in good order for sound horses to race upon, but hard for those. with faulty understandings, and particularly so for the jumpers, some of whjch it was a pity to see race with the conditions so against them. But for the hard nature of the ground there would have been more ’chasers racing, as on former occasions at Avondale. ' There were eight starters for the hurdle race, and four of them came down. Entente Cordiale, Benzine, Cynic and Keystone were those at fault, and each at a different hurdle in the first round in the order in which their names appear, Keepa, who rode Cynic, being bruised and heavily shaken. Ditto led all the way and won by three lengths and paid a very small dividend, being a strong favourite. Signature ran a fair race and finished second, while Totara Jack was twenty lengths off. Tiniroto, who was second favourite, was never fast enough to win over hurdles in good company, and was making an appearance after a long interval off the scene with 10.9 on his back, was still further back and showed no pace throughout. He will do better in steeplechase events, no doubt, later on. Carlysian was another strong fancy, ending up a big favourite in the Dominion Handicap. After some little delay Ohinewairua and Flowing Bowl were seen in the rear of the field, one side of the barrier appearing to have lifted before the other. Carlysian and Staccato were the leaders to the home turn, and then the former drew away and lasted long enough to win by three-parts of a length from the faster-finishing Gaycium. Bellacity was a length off, third, with Bridgie close up. The Nursery Handicap had nine starters, Prince Charleroi being withdrawn, his owner, Mr. G. Green, having purchased Stammer from the representative of the executors of the estate of the late Mr. W. J. Douglas the previous day. That colt was second favourite, Mr. Geo. Currie’s Rose Queen, who had run fourth on the opening day in the two-year-old event, being most fancied. North Loburn was next in demand. The start was somewhat broken. Rose Queen was always in the running at the head of affairs and won by nearly a length from Pentagram, who was finishing on, as was Canowindra, who did not begin well. North Loburn was fourth, with Stammer and Phyllona next. There were only five starters for the Autumn Handicap, Gazique being made favourite with some £6OO more on his number than was invested on Taiamai, who was being ridden by the apprentice Ferguson. The other three were at long prices, All Talk, Waiuta and Mullingar being backed in order. Gazique, Mullingar and All Talk was the order from the start and going out of the straight, where Taiamai appeared to get in trouble and lost some ground before she recovered herself, Waiuta being last. Over the last three furlongs the last-named improved her position and with a good run headed All Talk and got on terms with Gazique, who, ridden out, only won by a head. All Talk was a length and a-half off, with Taiamai, finishing well, about the same dis-

tance away, fourth. Mullingar was well back, last. An inquiry was held into the interference with Taiamai by All Talk, the rider of the last-named being exonerated. The Mount Eden Steeplechase drew three runners, Tirau, a hot favourite, falling at the first fence and getting away without the bridle. Spalperion led Dunrobin for two rounds and then the last-named fell, but was quickly remounted, only to baulk at different fences afterwards, ultimately completing the course, as did Tirau, who was caught and mounted by a bystander named Mynell, who had no trouble in piloting Tirau over the course, fop which he got a hearty cheer. It was rather a pity for the gelding, as he seemed sore after he fell, as were both Spalperion and Dunrobin when they finished. Bedford carried half the investments on the totalisator for the Waitakerei Handicap, and it certainly looked as if the Bunyan gelding would have won had not his rider (W. Ryan) got one foot out of the stirrupiron at the jump off and another further on in the race. This prevented him doing his mount justice—indeed, he appeared to be hanging on by the reins when the horses were finishing, with Gaycium leading Corregidor home, and the crowd, not knowing what had happened, gave Ryan a hckft —one of the first heard for a long time at Avondale. It was bad luck for all concerned, and it was well that

an enquiry was held, as a section of the crowd thought the act intentional. It might have happened to a more accomplished rider. It was well that he did not come off. Downham and Carlysian were dead-heaters for third place. Gaycium was finishing on in her first race, and she paid a good dividend considering this. Mountain Gold carried a good deal more money than Escaped, the second favourite and the winner of the Mount Roskill Hack Handicap. He beat fourteen others carrying top weight, and did it well, though it was only in the home stretch that he caught Penona, one of the outsiders, and beat that mare home, the inbred Mountain Gold getting third, with Don’t and Canzonet next in order. The Welter Handicap, with a round dozen starters, brought the business of the day to a close. Fabriquette and Kereone were the best supported. The first-named was never prominent, but Kereone led to the straight and was then gathered up in turn by Corregidor, Crowhurst and Hyllus, the last-named coming fast and beating Crowhurst and getting within a length of Corregidor. Mr. M. Foley, the president, filled the judge’s box with satisfaction. Mr. R. E. Harley effected some good starts, but found the electric barrier did not work just to his liking early in the day. The results were: — WAIKTTMETE HANDICAP HURDLES of 230sovs; .second 20sovs, third 10 sovs. Two miles. I—W.1 —W. C. Morgan’s b m Ditto, aged, by Spalpeen — Repetition, 11.13 (J. Roach) 1 6 — C.
