RACING REVIEWED

AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB. AUTUMN MEETING. A perfect day favoured this suburban club for the opening day of their autumn meeting on Saturday, and it certainly looked as though the largest crowd ever assembled there had turned out for the occasion. The stand was heavily taxed and the green sloping lawn and all along the fence skirting the course were fully occupied, while the stewards’ and the members’ stand had the usual muster. The roads were in very fair order for motoring, and the train service was up to date. The races were got off well up to time. A few of the starts were a bit broken through green horses and apprentice riders, but some of the horses, notably Housewife, gave the starter (Mr. Harley) trouble, and she was left several chains in her race, as she has often been under other starters. Some of the dismissals could hardly have been improved upon. The racing all through was interesting, but first actual favourites won six of the races, and one second fancy won, while two second favourites ran second. The favourites to win were: General Stephen (who beat 19 others, four of which carried overweights, while five received apprentices’ allowances), Stammer, Monopole, Tirau, Crowhurst and Waiuta. Those that failed were Housewife and Gazique, and it looked as it Housewife might have won had she not been left, as she got up fourth, making up a lot of ground. In the Maiden Plate Handicap General Stephen was remembered for several prominent displays last year, and carried nearly £3OO more than War Tank, who was second in demand. The favourite duly won from Admiral Advance, the fifth favourite, with War Tank in third place, Bridgie, who was prominent all through, being fourth. Formalin, who was third fancy, let her supporters down. Mr. Tutaki Teringitanga’s Pitoro was the greatest outsider in the field, and if the dividend had been for the last horse those who contributed amongst them £l5 to support the aged son of Needlegun would have had wins to remember for a long time. The brown horse, Llansannor, by Salpeen from Waimangu, was second least supported. Stammer, z a two-year-old by Demosthenes, racing for the executors of the estate of the late W. J. Douglas and who came up for the A.R.C. autumn meeting, walked away with the Juvenile Apprentices’ Handicap. Canowindra, who many would have liked to see have a winning turn, beat all the rest, North Loburn, a visitor, getting third, while Rose Queen, who did not begin well, was fourth.

Monopole and Silver Pine were the best backed of the Hurdle Race candidates, styled hacks, and Totara Jack, after leading, gave place to Monopole, who led pretty well all the way over the last mile, while Silver Pine, who was threatening danger along the back, came in lame, and Keystone, when looking like giving Monopole something hard to do, ran down the last hurdle and finished fifth, under the judge’s box, his rider (J. Preston) being almost out of the saddle. Cynic, Garryowen and Signature came home in order behind Monopole, separated by intervals of about two lengths. Cynic gave a fair display, as also did Garryowen, but the ground was so hard for jumping that it is hard to say how things might have gone if it had been otherwise. The jumping of several of the horses was noticeably short.

Gazique was very heavily supported for the Avondale Handicap, but the leniently-treated Taiamai counted a lot of friends, and she never let anything else in after she struck the front, which was directly after the start. Bedford was running second and All Talk on the outside of him as they went out of the straight and to the back of the course, when Taiamai drew away and led the pair named into the straight, both making strong efforts to get up. They closed the gap, and Bedford, putting in a good run. nearly got on terms with Taiamai, who, however, had another run left and managed to shake him off. All Talk was a handy third, with Gaziciue fourth, Mangamahoe fifth and Mullingar last. The time (2min. 6 l-ssec.) is a record for the course. The last six furlongs took lmin. 15 l-ssec., and the pace was thus on all the way. Taiamai has been a most consistent performer,

and the weight adjusters have underestimated her all along. She has won more races this season than any other equine in the Auckland province up to a mile and a-quarter. The Oakley Handicap was contested by a field of eight, Housewife counting a few more friends than Hyllus, who was giving her a stone. Escaped was third in demand. The latter got interfered with by Explode, whose rider’s gear slipped. Housewife disbehaved and lost so much ground that it probably cost her the race. Fabriquette, when nearly on terms, with Corregidor turning for home, ran wide, a common experience with horses at the bend there, and her 51b. apprentice’s allowance did not, under the circumstances, benefit her. M. D. O’Shea rode Corregidor, who was bred by Mr. James Muir and occasionally scores a win. The Chevalier Steeplechase Handicap was the good thing it was voted for Tirau, who was so much superior in class to his three opponents, one of which, Dunrobin, did not like the-hard ground and stopped at the water after running second to the last round. The ancient Golden Glow, who it would be humane to pension off as he is very sore, ran second, 50 yards behind the winner, who could have been as much further ahead. Yellow and White, a five-year-old mare by Sylvia Park, was a hundred yards away third. Tirau is owned at Hawera by Mr. Alex. Mitchell, and was got by Spalpeen, who has left us so many bold jumpers. Crowhurst and Rockfield were nearly evenly backed for the Railway

Handicap, but the last-named was not seen at his best, and after Canzonet, who got to work better than any of the others, had done the leading for most of the distance, Carlysian, Ohinewairua and Crowhurst came into the picture, the lastnamed winning by a neck, with Canzonet a length off third, Ohinewairua and the fast-finishing Kauri King next. Canzonet ran wide turning into the straight. Waiuta, carrying top weight, started favourite for the Titirangi Welter, and, well handled by H. Robinson, came on the scene, and after Kereone had made the running with Pierrot in second place and Lady Energy failed to respond, she came through and won by half a length. This was a long overdue victory. When the totalisator figures for the day were made up it was found that they had exceeded those of last year by £5495. the total reached being £45,899 10s.—a record for the club. The results were: —
