SECOND DAY.

HYDRUS WINS AUTUMN HANDICAP. The meeting was concluded on Friday, when there was a fair attendance of the public. The fields were on the small side, but again some interesting racing resulted. No less than six first favourites scored during the afternoon, making ten for the two days. A regrettable feature of the meeting was the absence of music on either day. The totalisator again showed a falling off, the sum of £15,739 being put through, making a total of £34,832 for the two days, as against £54,711 last year, a decrease of £19,879. The secretary, Mr. C. J. Carlyon, again had everything in fine working order, and was courteous and attentive to visitors.

The opening event was contested by a field of five, Manu being sent out favourite. Imaribbon gave some trouble at the start, but again got v e’l away. The favourite led the field till the straight was reached, when Vascovia displaced him and won nicely. The winner, who is a member of W. Garrett’s team, paid a double-figure dividend. For the Russell Handicap, Chimera was made favourite in a field of five, and Mr. Vallance’s mare scored a long overdue win. It. is just twelve months since Chimera won a race. Trentham Rose was the pacemaker to the straight, but here the favourite came through and had something to spare from Trentham Rose and Pariform at the finish. The big race of the day was a good betting one, Multaine, Nystad and Hydrus coming in for solid support. The last-named was first away, followed by Goldstream and Form Up. With seven furlongs covered. Goldstream had charge from Nystad, while Multaine was lying last. Nystad came away in the straight, but Hydrus put in a good run, and won by a head. Multaine made up a lot of ground over the last two furlongs and finished third. There were only three runners in the Ruamahanga Hack, and they finished in the order of favouritism on the machine. Tuticorn led at the start, but was passed by Zabism and Red Signal, the last-named winning very easily. Half a dozen youngsters went to the post for the Juvenile Handicap, favouritism resting with the Keniball bracket, Missgold and Misslass. Hyades got a flying start, but was soon overtaken by Chaeronia. Missgold challenged in the run home and just got up in time to win by a head from Chaeronia. Hyades was a length and a-half away third. Kiltess was favourite for the Rawiri Welter, with Sweet Tipperary and Hydrus next in demand. The latter was making his second appearance during the afternoon. There was a delay at the start, but when the field got away Altercation went to the front, followed by Hydrus and Loyal Arch. Kiltess took the lead at the turn, and, withstanding a challenge •by Loyal Arch, won by over a length. The Camp Hack proved a good thing for Battle Array, a winner on the opening day. After Royal Battery had set the pace over the first few furlongs the favourite ran into second place and came away in the straight and won very easily in Deeley’s hands by a length and a-half from Penury Rose. The meeting was brought to a close with the Pirinoa Hack Handicap, favouritism resting with Rebekah, on which Sid. Reid had the mount. The favourite jumped out at the start and gave nothing else a chance, winning easily by two lengths from Stutter, with Restful in third place.
