GISBORNE RACING CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING.

The Gisborne Racing Club have completed the preliminary arrangements for their autumn gathering, which is to take place on the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s course at Makaraka on Thursday, March 27. A total sum of 1030sovs has been allocated by the club in connection with the eight events carded, and that the programme will receive liberal patronage from sportsmen is a view freely expressed in racing circles. Apart from its financial aspect, the meeting promises to be one of the most enjoyable yet held in the autumn by this popular racing body, and a strong contingent of visiting horses should be seen out at the fixture, as two days later the. Poverty Bay Turf Club’s fixture comes up for decision, thus making a trip to Gisborne at the end of the present month well worth the consideration of owners. Of the events to be run at the fixture the Gisborne Racing Club Handicap, of 250sovs, one mile and a-quarter, takes precedence, and

should be the means of bringing together a field of good size and quality. The two open sprint races are separated on the programme by four other events, being the second and last races respectively, so that owners may start their horses in both should they desire. The events in question comprise the Flying Handicap, of 150sovs, six furlongs, and the Final Handicap, of 130sovs, to be run over a similar distance. The Jumpers’ Flat Handicap, of 125sovs, one mile and a-half, is certain to be well patronised by owners of hurdlers, who will be glad of the opportunity to give their horses a race prior to fulfilling their engagements in the hurdle race at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s gathering the following Saturday. The Welter Handicap (one mile), Taruheru Hack Handicap (seven furlongs), Maiden Scurry (four furlongs), and Awapuni Hack Handicap (five furlongs), all of which events are each of 125sovs value, complete an attractive programme which should provide patrons with an excellent afternoon s sport. Nominations for all events close with the secretary, Mr. H. E. Dodd, Gisborne, on Friday, March 14, at 8 p.m., while Mr. H. Coyle will declare the weights for all handicaps on Tuesday, March 18.
