NOTTINGHAM CASTLE, ENGLAND, showing the massive ridge of sandstone rock on which it is built. In the old days many daring entrances were made to the castle by means of subterranean passages, some of which are shown in the picture. Especially was this so when Robin Hood and his merry men held the adjacent forest of Sherwood. Nottingham Castle was one of Britain’s leading fortresses. There is an old saying, viz.: “Sturdy as the rock on which Notts Castle is built.”
